My boyfriend took lithium for years and now has stage 3 kidney disease. I took lithium for a year and now have hypothyroidism and have to take levothyroxine for life. I know it works for so many people but never again for us!

I took lithium with seraquel from 2011 to 2014. Seraquel trigged my depression and forged it to bipolar, while lithium damaged my thyroid gland. So I was forced to quit both in 2014, when I was hospitalised for some days (they couldn’t just switch - I needed to go through some tests first). And all analysis looked bad. Doctors told me, if I continued with lithium not only would I get my thyroid gland destroyed - I would damage heavily my kidneys as well.

So since 2014 I’m on olanzapine and ergenyl. One downside of too much ergenyl was that my hands started to shake, but when they adjusted to the right (“Goldilock”) dose, I’m as fine as I ever was before.

The doctors office called a few minutes ago and set me up with an appointment with a kidney doctor for next Tuesday. I'm trying not to read too much into it, but at least specialists used to be booked months out because of of covid. Even getting an ultrasound took 2 weeks to get. My mom told me not to worry about it. My therapist told me to just ask the doctor a lot of questions so I'm not left wondering and anxious.

This person I know who is about the same age as me struggled really badly with her mental health and was in and out of the hospitals since she was 10 and discovered lithium and she has been out of the hospital for a over a year and claims the drug saved her life.

Meanwhile I'm thinking "oh hon, just wait until it starts giving you health issues and then you'll be back to where you started with your mental health and your physical health will be ****ed up as well."
