Two times my psych meds caused this and it happened a third time today!

I was at the dr for constipation and my bladder hurt when the np pushed on it. They did an ultrasound and found almost 800 whatevertheyares of urine! I drove myself to the ER. Had to pee a lot and then they strait cathed me to get the last little bit out. I told the dr I refuse to go home with a catheter in place. I’ll be fine now.

I’ve got a call in to my psych NP and one of the people in the office is going to call me back. Could be gabapentin or it could be the muscle relaxer. I’ve been taking both for several months so who knows. I have a follow up with my primary dr Monday. I’m going to skip gabapentin and the muscle relaxer until Monday when I see my primary.

If it could be one or the other (as in, they know for sure both can cause it), it's probably the combination. Like most antipsychotics can cause it and benztropine can cause it, and taking one or the other is fine for me, but if I take benztropine to treat EPS caused by antipsychotics while still on the antipsychotic, I get urinary retention. If I'm on two antipsychotics, I get it.

It's definitely one of the more frustrating side effects I've ever had, for sure. Especially going to the ER for it and they ask for a urine sample and it's like "YOU IDIOTS I'M HERE BECAUSE I CAN'T ****ING GO!" *cue chucked urine cups and ugly crying followed by bladder scan where it can't even tell them how much liquid's in my bladder because it's more than can be accurately detected* "oh, I'd be in pain too if I had over a liter of urine in me that couldn't come out."

I hope you can get this settled. I'd tell all your docs from now on you're prone to urinary retention and need to avoid meds that cause it.

I’ve been on benztropine too! And my psych office never called me back!

Waiting for a doctor from my primary’s office to call me back. And someone to get ahold of my Pdoc. Haven’t taken my psych meds. I took a long nap today so I can wait for little while.

I skipped Vraylar and gabapentin tonight. I’ve talked to way too many doctors and nurses and answering services. All they will do since it’s the weekend is say they’ll see if I can see my psych np next week! They sent her an email but no response. The constipation is mushy and I can go but it’s a lot of wiping. The peeing seems normal. One person told me your bladder can burst if it gets too full! I’ve stopped eating pears since I think they are the cause of the constipation. The constipation may have contributed to the urinary retention I think.

I've been told the same thing about the bladder bursting. It sounds painful

Slept 36 hours getting up to go. Stopped Vraylar and gabapentin. Stopped Metamucil. Still taking colace. Ate macaroni and cheese hour ago. Dunno if that was a stupid thing to do or not. Probably eating was stupid! I see my primary tomorrow. And Pdoc will be in the office!

Still going pee and bm. Feeling no pressure like I was before. I really hope my Pdoc will take me off these meds. Next step is ECT! It is what it is. I hope I can see my Pdoc tomorrow- hopefully in the morning before I go to the primary doctor.

Now I have a rash between my butt cheeks. All that sticky poop! And I took a shower today but it’s not from soap because I just rinsed with water. It’s probably yeast. I’ll mention it at my appointment with my primary dr.

Yup, a lot of these psych meds cause all kinds of additional problems even without fixing or relieving much of (if at all) the initial problem. 🙏

Texted my psych case manager asking if I can get an in person appointment with my psych NP because I stopped my psych meds and about the urinary retention.

I’m finally done at the doctor. It was my primary dr so that was nice. I've known her since I was pregnant with N1 who is 27 now. I do have a really red buttocks so she said use the prescription cream I used before or Vaseline. No fever but my throat is sore and my head feels dizzy and heavy and my throat hurts so she did a triple culture- Covid, flu and strep. No news is good news- she said she’ll call by 7 p.m. if any are positive. She did say my throat is red. She called in a prescription for Senna for the constipation. Colace works but you aren’t supposed to take it very long or you can become dependent on it. The pharmacy is going to call when my script is ready. I didn’t have a fever but my face feels like I do. My body has been achey. I’d think that all that sleep I had over the weekend would’ve cleared things up!

Maybe I should nap or at least go to bed early as I only slept 3 hours this morning.

Going back on psych meds. Dr said the constipation caused the urinary retention. Hence the Senna prescription.

Couldn’t pick up my prescription Senna. Pharmacy said they didn’t have it in their system. All my tests came back negative so I guess I’ve just got a cold and lack of sleep and a butt rash. Just took all my nighttime meds. Still having chills.
