Hi DocJohn. Thanks for the info. I'm Bipolar I. Figured I was born that way. Mom also bipolar. Am on Cymbalta 60 mg. in the morning. It has really woken my brain up. I'm having vivid dreams again, typing them up and taking them to my therapist. Thought Cymbalta caused mania in me, but new psychiatrist let me give it another try. I had become deeply depressed after being hospitalized for having a directional delusion. Hospital shrink yanked me off Cymbalta. Horrible withdrawals. Also have fibro. and chronic pain, so Cym helps that too. Felt myself going manic, but was able to stop it dead in its tracks. I have a NOW button. When this gets pushed, I want everything NOW -- CDs, clothes, etc. This time I talked with my husband about my impulses and with his help I reined myself in.
I can't seem to find out how to start a thread. Can you instruct me? Thanx, PegasiNine |

I'm not sure if I'm bipolar. Sometimes I have felt the uncontrollable rage that was described in the article. And sometimes I feel very productive, and at others I feel depressed. I was diagnosed with depression before, but I don't know, maybe it's progressed to being bipolar? IMHO, it sounds like it but I haven't been diagnosed.

I'm new to the site and diagnosed with Bipolar II NOS about eleven years ago. Going through a depressive episode at the moment that's lasted three months so far.
When this episode hit, right on the heels of a hypomania ep, I feel like I had an emotional breakdown. I'm terrified of going back to work (been on disability for six weeks) and feel completely fragile and overwhelmed almost all the time. Have any of the Bipolars here been on long-term disability? Also, anyone else here on Kaiser? While they offer me weekly group therapy I can only get one on one therapy once every 4-5 weeks, which seems pretty inadequate to me. Thanks for your time. CCL |

Bipolar is just the newer name for manic depression. To have bipolar you have to have episodes of mania or hypomania (lower mania) alternating with "normal" periods and periods of depression. If you are diagnosed with depression then you don't have mania/hypomania.... just depression.

I honestly didn't notice any difference. I went on it for unbearable headaches but it made me stupid. I could barely form coherent sentences. Too bad, it helped the pain.

Hi there. I have recently joined PsychCentral.
I believe I have symptoms of Biploar Disorder/ Manic Depression, there are key signs of it, I know I def get major depressive episodes, but also feel I suffer from manic phases too. I have taken self-tests and done a lot of introspection, learning, and kept diaries of my thoughts, feelings, experiences over years. So far I have not had thorough assessment and clear diagnosis by Psychiatrist (do have an appointment booked to see one), but Im highly sure I have Bipolar, possibly Bipolar1 and may get into psychotic states sometimes too, def get suicidal. It is hard acknowledging, accepting I have a mental illness that Ive been battling with very much in silence for about 7 to 10 years and that I may require to be on medication for long term as well as therapy and other kinds of help. I feel anxious about where things are heading for me, about whether I will be able to manage things better with approp, effective sources of help and support and if ppl can take me seriously and treat me well. |

hi i am new to this forum and am married to a man who was diagnosed with mental illness/bipolar 5-6 years ago. he doesnt take any meds and does not want to see a doctor. we have been married for 4 years and things are escalating. his bouts of anger are more frequent. he is verbally abusive and mentally abusive. i know that the most important thing one needs when dealing with bipolar/IED is patience but i am at my breaking point. all i do now is cry and its hard for me to even look at him in the face because of all the words he has used. he always says sorry but i seriously don't know what to do. please anyone give me advice. how do i cope? how do i help him?

Sometimes I get paranoid and think that someone in my life is going to abandon me. I constantly obsess over the thought of them leaving to the point where I get worked up and curse them out over perceived mistreatment, in which they are incredibly confused because no events predicted it. Does this sound like the paranoia that comes with hypomania, or is it just insecurity? This isn't typical behavior for me.

No, it doesn't sound like bipolar but I would consider borderline personality disorder.

I've considered BPD in the past, but I don't have most of the symptoms. Most of my relationships are pretty stable, and I don't usually flip out like that. It only really happens when I get in a more driven/uppity state, and I become increasingly irritable. And it just started recently...that's another thing that threw me off.
But anyway, I digress. I should get some sleep. __________________ "I'd never done a crazy thing in my life before that night." - Wayne's World. -ADHD-PI. 36mg Strattera -Graduate from the School of Self-Sabotage and Giving Advice You Should Really Take Yourself Contact me today and I'll tell you how to alienate people and destroy all chances of happiness in 30 days or less, or your money back!* *Note: this 30 day guarantee is automatically void if you are human and breathing. |

Hi I just wanted to ask. Has anyone been really up and happy full of life start to come down your mind starts to ease and quiet down some but then you start thinking about everything you're not and should be. You get sad but at the same time you have energy. Just feelings with the opposite also contributing? I've been paying much more attention to my mood since going on medication so I'm not totally sure if this is normal for me or I should be worried. Then again I thought I just had.ptsd lol surrrprise =S. Anyway I just wanted to know if this is normal or if I should be worried.

Hi, it sounds like you might be having a mixed episode. I do not know how long you have been on your current medication, but it may need to be tweeked. I would call you psychiatrist and ask your doctor about it. You should be aware of your moods, it is very important to keep track of them and let your doctor know how you are feeling. I downloaded a great free mood tracking software for my desktop, also available for phone. It is called Optimism. Check any search engine, it will help you, you can chart your moods, keep a journal and even print out your mood chart for your doctor and therapist to try to find patterns to keep yourself aware of how you are feeling. It has helped me immensely. I hope you feel better soon.

Bipolar can be genetic, it can also happen for no reason. I do not know about ADHD or not. Just because you are bipolar does not mean that other membersof your family will get it. My mom suffers from depression, is not on meds, my sister had post-partum depression and was on meds, not sure if she is or not, my dad has panic disorder, as do I and my brother and sister do like-wise. I have Bipolar NOS- non specified-not bipolar 1, and not enough symptoms to be Bipolar 2, but I have been manic, hypo-manic and suffer from bipolar depression from time to time. Being on meds keeps me from being manic or hypo-manic. You may want to talk to your doctor about adjusting your medicatios if you are experiencing mania, your meds may need to be tweeked.
