Hi,
I'm wondering if there are any parents out there who have children who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. If you do, what have you found to be the most effective ways of handling the unrestrained impulses that seem to be so common?

Thanks!

Hi fellowtraveler

My sons doctors are about a stones throw from diagnosing him (officially) with bipolar disorder. For now though, they are prescribing Risperdal for the impulses, tantrums, acting out, etc...

Good luck and PM me if you have any questions or concerns!

Dee

Hi,
Thanks for your reply! Mostly I'm interested in ways that folks manage the behaviors and cope with the symptoms of their kids. I am a big believer in appropriate medication but I also think that it's just one piece of the puzzle. Usually meds help but don't completely eliminate the symptoms. So families (parents) are left with alot of adjusting and trial and error in terms of coping. I'm wondering what some of the "trials and successes" have been.

Gotcha! We have an in home wrap around service that offers weekly individual and family counseling. My son also has an emotion book. Each day he draws a picture of his strongest emotion, what the date is, and a brief description of why he felt that way.
