My therapist confirmed that I am bipolar. She recommended giving control of the money to my hubby, because I'm a spending spree manic. She also said that I should distance myself from my mother because she triggers a lot of my episodes. This is going to be very difficult for me. I just bought a house right behind her, lol. My mother and I talk at least once a day if not more. What should I do? Should I take the doctors orders literally, or should I try to limit the contact with her without distancing too much. I don't know what to do. She is my best friend. It was devastating for me to hear her say that!! Help!?!?

Sorry momofboys321, I don't have any answers for you.

I've had similar issues with my own mother. I will say, however, that sometimes when we are enmeshed in a situation that might be harmful to us, we cannot see it unless we take a step back, clear our heads then and have another look.

So maybe instead of talking everyday, go to every other as a test and see how that works. Baby steps.

You need to do what you think is best. If it were me I would try and distance myself, but not entirely. Talk to her or see her every couple days or as much as you can handle without going into an episode. In this case you are going to have to go through some trial and error. Good luck.
