I have been diagnosed with PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome. Yep, a lot is wrong with me. I was wondering is there a link between PCOS and bipolar disorder? Do bipolars tend to have PCOS moreso than other women?

I have PCOS and am also bipolar II along with other things. I'm not sure about the incidents of bipolar and the rates between them and PCOS. It would be an interesting study though.

What are you difficulties with it? My main ones are the weight issues which Thank you Lord I am overcoming thanks to bariatric surgery, I have a bunch of facial hair, my periods are wonky and my knees and elbows are always discolored and look like they are dirty even though I have scrubbed them to kingdom come trying to get them to come clean.

I haven't had the bariatric surgery, but my doctor mentioned it. But it is way too expensive. I read it is around the 15-20K range. My issues are that of weight, hirutism, dark spots that come out of nowhere, and diabetes. It is rough and I feel like giving up. I have no business doing so, but that is how I feel. It would be an interesting study.

PCOS can severely affect hormone levels that come directly from the pituitary........this can also affect dopamine, endorphine and seratonin release. Not sure of direct correlation but it stands to reason that you should get hormone panels done regularly LHFSH(Luetinising Hormone and Follicular stimulating hormone), Eostrogen, progesterone (forgive spelling).

In saying this I have a friend that has PCOS and does not suffer mental illness.

Good luck babe........

Sodium valproate, a medication used in bipolar patients, has been shown in some studies to cause PCOS or should I say that there was a high rate of PCOS with ppl who took that drug.

I have bipolar and PCOS, I never took valproate but I have taken other drugs in that class. I dont know if there really is a connection, but I wouldnt be surprise if there was.

I should add that my biggest problem with my PCOS, is my weight gain and irregular periods. I hardly get periods so I have an abnormally thick uterine wall. I also have high prolactin levels so that may be it too.

Either way, I definately feel ur pain
