not sure if this is the right forum to post this .. perhaps it belongs in the meds forum, idk.

anyway, i was wondering if anyone knows when antipsychotics are prescribed for borderline personality disorder. i thought (from what i've read)the first choice of meds was SSRIs. but my dr's started with antipsychotics. dont wanna bring it up with him- was wondering if someone here could tell me why SSRIs wouldn't be the first choice prescription for a dr treating bpd.

thanks

SSRI's are a form of anti-depressant

I was prescribed an anti-psychotic because I was having hallucinations and severe dissociation--psychosis brought on my extreme stress. If you are under extreme stress and they are trying to head off major cognitive distortions, that could be why. They had a "deadening" effect, which I hated, but the hallucinations stopped and then we could get to more "normal" symptoms. When I dissociate, nothing sticks--I can't even remember what I was doing two hours ago, let alone what some therapist told me.
ASAP, other meds were added, tweaked, changed, added. It took a good year to find the right mix...closer to two years, really. (Lamictal and tegretol and some little ones to help with vitamin deficiencies--which are common for us)

bpd2- i tend to dissociate a lot, especially under stress, I hear the noises around me, but nothing sticks. Also often in the last bit of a T session. I wonder if an anti-psychotic could help.
I'm on Lamictin and Wellbutrin (For BP)

Hi, suga !
Maybe worth a try? When severe symptoms--like floating on the ceiling stopped--we tapered off the geodon. (Risperdal made me gain weight.) To help with the inability to remember therapy sessions, my t took notes, sent them with me, had me write a short essay that recollected those points and send them to him. Then, he used an editing program and responded to the email within the emial, using another color of ink. The responses were corrections and any points I had missed. There was usually some small behavioral homework that I was supposed to do until I saw him again, too. That helped a lot. Recently, we tried using a tape recorder. Sometimes that is helpful, but sometimes I felt like it got in the way.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I think you're right- the cognitive distortions are probably why they're prescribed.
