Hi my names Josie, I'm 19 years of age. I have had a history of drug and alcohol abuse and when I was younger I suffered from child abuse. I fell into depression about 2 years ago and have been on anti-deppresants for almost 2 years. My doctor referred me to the 'mental health team' and they suspected I may have EUPD (bpd). So whilst waiting for a report I read up on 'bpd' and I know I fit alot of the symptoms and tendencies. Just received the report back and all it stated was that I needed to go to a drug and alcohol abuse 'group'. How do I go about getting a proper diagnosis and the help/therapy I need? I just don't feel like anyone is helping me in the right way. Also has anyone had experiences with CBT/DBT, are they successful methods of treating bpd?..

Hi josiemaria90, welcome to Psych Central!

I wonder if your treatment team decided you'd need to get your drug and alcohol issues out of the way before they'd consider diagnosing you further or considering other treatment options. The way I understand it, Marsha Linehan developed DBT at least partly as a way of helping clients deal with "therapy-interfering behaviors" so that they could be present and available to participate in their regular therapy.

Many, many members have posted about DBT. Unfortunately our search engine can't handle 3-letter search terms but if you search on "dialectical" instead, you'll find quite a few threads about DBT.

We do have a DBT Discussion and Support social group (with a forum its own). It hasn't been very active lately but you might find it worthwhile taking a look anyway. I think you can already read there but you'll need to post a few more times before you can join social groups and post there.

Edited to add: I found some good discussion of DBT in this thread. There are several links to other sources, including this article in the Psych Central library: An Overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
