Some people know that they were/are hearing voices. How? How do you know this? I've never understood.

Whenever I've apparently heard voices/noises, and was so sure it had happened, people are like "you're just hearing things", but I'm sure I heard it.

I'm a person who has heard voices and known it. I can tell you how. It's called 'reality checking.' You can only really do reality checking if you're not having other sever psychosis from what I understand.

For example, once I was in the shower. I had my back to the curtain and an adult male voice whispered in my left ear "Hey!" It was a loud whisper. I screamed and turned around, thinking it was my husband trying to scare me. But he was not in the bathroom, and was in fact on the other side of the house alseep in bed. The only other person in the house was my 5 year old son, also asleep soundly in his room.

So, reality check. Either a) it's a ghost or demon or something super natural, or b) I heard a voice and it's an auditory hallucination. The more logical answer is B, especially since I have a history of auditory hallucinations.

I have wondered the same thing. I hear things, but I do not hear them clearly enough to understand what is being said. What I hear is more like a TV or radio is on a few rooms down the hall. I can hear it well enough to tell if it is music or talking. I can tell if it is male or female. The cadence is usually consistent with a talk show and not actual conversation.

Doing the reality check thing, there are no radios on TVs on within the range of my hearing. I have had this experience scores of time over a period of decades. I have never told anyone about it, because what is there to tell really? I can not understand wha is being said, so it really does not effect me, other than being a bit unnerving.

For along time I would find myself talking back to the voices I heard as if there were someone nearby. As time has gone by most of the time I can halt myself before talking. Sometimes it does sound like background noise tv or radio others like there is someone or many others right here with me. Antipsychotics have helped only alittle. I think I would be lost without my visual and auditory hallucinations. After I had a stroke I developed other sensory developments that I could really live without --touch and smell, creepy.

I have a story for you. One time I was taking bannana bread out of the oven I not only heard my name being called but I felt a chill rush by me. I was not married at the time and my children were asleep. One time I found burnt matches in the window sill in a window that has been shut tight for the winter. I know for sure no one did it cause I winterized all of the windows. Could this be hallecenations(sp) or spirits. How did they know my name? HMMMM I have never taken physicatropic meds. Just thought I would share.

Oh crap, Ive had both happen, the male voice was when I was 13 and laying in bed, still remember it clearly to this day, sends chills down my spine. As for things I hear like tv and stuff, that's been happening more and more especially during periods of no sleep, Ill hear a muffled conversation, think it is the tv or comming from outside, walk out of my room to find that nothing is on in the house and no one is outside talking. I also see shadowed figures a lot mostly animals, cats/dogs scattering across a room or my still alive grandpa in places where he isn't, he will be sitting across the room from me talking to me and all of a suddin i see what looks to be a shadowed figure of him in the kitchen and I know he isn't in there plus he can't move that fast. He know that happens to me because we find it fun humor to ask where i seen him this time. But it does freak me out when Im alone and he's in bed or Im at school, so do the scattering animals. But at this point I don't think it's bad enough to worry too much about, since I can reality check.
