So I went to the counselor for the second time today. When I first went to the psychiatrist I was told I have Borderline, along with many other things. But my counselor says they will not diagnose me with BPD until they have known me a year, and that THEY think I am Bipolar....not Borderline. What do I do with this? I feel like I connect SO WELL to Borderline...but what if I'm Bipolar? How do I know? What if I have both!? Someone told me it was possible I have both. :C I just really don't know where to go from here.

Bipolar and BPD have some overlap. It's nice to have a diagnosis but really, it comes down to a label and having a label isn't all that important. What's important is treating your symptoms. If you feel comfortable hanging around this part of PC and talking about what you're feeling, then no one is going to kick you out simply because you don't have a diagnosis. It may be possible for you to have both and you'll have to cross that bridge when you get to it. For now, focus on treating the symptoms and that may make things more simple for you.
Thanks for this!

I know that I have bipolar, but they are deferring the dx of bpd. So I don't have a firm diagnoses, but I'm here, and I'm learning b/c I can relate. So I just might be both. I'm sure what will help for one will help for the other.

I've also been diagnosed with both: bipolar II & borderline personality. But I mostly hang out here rather than the bipolar forum because I feel as if I can relate better here.

Well considering many are DX'd with bipolar when they are bpd, this is not unbelievable that they think you are BP. What they have done is a good analysis. They've been realistic in saying they wouldn't DX you with bpd until after a year and that makes sense. There are some things with BPD that could only show up with longer term patterns of behavior. I think this is a good thing they want to wait to see.

My suggestion is that you have a good set of clinicians for your therapy and you should stick with it. More than likely if you are truly bpd they will see that. Give it time and after getting to know you and your behaviors they will more accurately be able to DX you.

Thing also to keep in mind is that many of the meds if they put you on any are good for both BP and BPD so you'll still be in good care for now.
Thanks for this!
