When I was 15 I went to see my Gynecologist about any options of meds for my social anxiety. She choose to put me on Prozac at the lowest dose. I went about three weeks before I became suicidal and tried to overdose. When my Gyno found out she threated to call the cops and have me put into an institution. All because I texted her a simple questions regarding what if on suicide. (She gave me her cell number to keep in touch, which I thought was nice of a doc to do.) At my next scheduled appointment things didn't go ideally.

She told me that kind of action could get me put into an insane asylum. She then told me I had characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder. I had never heard of it but went to look it up after. I have to say I do fit in some ways, but others are not me. I think she was wrong to quickly label me as this, and she isn't even a p-doc.

This was about 6 years ago, and I haven't seen her since.

Why on earth would you see a gyno about social anxiety?
Thanks for this!

That's pretty wrong, imo.

A gynecologist has no business doing what you described. 15 is too young for a diagnosis of a personality disorder (I'm assuming she only suggested it, hence 'label'). My mom noticed superficial cuts on my wrist when I was in sixth grade and threatened to have me stripped naked and thrown in a padded room (to this day I wonder why people think scary and mean is helpful).

I don't know where you live, but over here to to be thrown in an insane asylum for that is a gross exaggeration and makes it sound like she had malicious intent (sometime unstable people project onto other people or even become therapists and doctors) . Under and over diagnosis are a big problem, and in my own experience and what I've read online, some doctors and psychologists are "trigger happy" to throw around labels like this. I've had several people at the drop of a hat diagnose me with things without proper evaluation which later proved to be wrong. Borderline personality disorder is sometimes strapped onto to people for various reasons that have little or nothing to do with it. In some minds, being a socially anxious teenage girl who has been suicidal would make you a prime target.
Thanks for this!

Well I agree a gyno has no business diagnosing mental issues. Period. But that being said, with regards to your not having some of the traits, well you don't hve to have them all. I think that the number is like 7 traits you have to have to be dx'd.
Thanks for this!

First, I'm so sorry you were scared like that. You did need to be advised on things like side effects including suicidal ideation or plans but a gyno is ill equipped to do that sort of counseling which is why she should have never agreed to provide you with medication or act outside of the bounds of her specialty. Her fault---NOT yours.

Having said that, medications are a tricky thing. Those that work well for some will be disastrous for others even if two people have the same diagnosis.
Please get yourself to the appropriate health care provider. You may have to get a referral from your primary (depending upon insurance requirements) but stick with the process of getting yourself into capable and qualified hands.
It may turn out that BPD is not in fact the correct diagnosis for you only a qualified provider can make that decision.

Best of luck to you
