I was just released from an inpatient behavioral health unit after 6 days. I went in because I was feeling really hopeless and was drinking and cutting more. The first session the psychiatrist thought I could be bipolar. Then the next session was still not convinced I wasn't after I asked. The session after that he said I had borderline personality disorder. The next day the PA student with him said I had 'depression with borderline traits' after I asked for what they were saying about me. After that he just asked if I read up and agreed with BPD. It was not on my discharge (that just said depression NOS and anxiety) nor did anyone straight out tell me. The psychiatrist said that I should do DBT so I am scheduled for an intensive outpatient program (with my intake meeting tomorrow), for 3 day a week group therapy and weekly individual therapy/psychiatry appt. I just want to know something for sure...I know a diagnosis is not your identity, but I need something to identify with. After reading about BPD, everything that a person with BPD says they feel, I feel.

Sorry if this is long, but if anyone has any suggestions or helpful words, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like BPD may be suspected, but not known for certain. Hence why you were refered to DBT. A good DBT T should be able to tell more accurately I think. When I did DBT there were 4 pre-treatment sessions to make sure the therapist and program were right for me.
Good luck at your intake.
Thanks for this!

I know it may be overwhelming at first, but if that is your Dx it is treatable and the prognosis isn't as bad as I first thought when I was diagnosed.
Thanks for this!

This website describes what I feel very accurately.

What are the Borderline Personality Disorder Traits?

Quite likely they are hesitant for an "official" BPD diagnosis. Sometimes a pdoc will not want that Dx simply for the fact that it could be more difficult to get insurance to cover any treatment costs. Not always but that's what I've found anyway.
Thanks for this!

If you haven't read 'I Hate You Don't Leave me' you should. It helped me a lot coming to terms and finding as much out about this disorder as I could. Although having a diagnosis can be a relief, it's also ALOT to process! Like you said though, you are not your diagnosis! Coming to grips with your diagnosis puts you on the healing path! Good luck!

It takes a while to diagnose personality disorders - i would be skeptical of the term simply being thrown around, especially if you've not been seeing this team for very long. Push for answers as much as you can although i'm aware that in the US this can be easier said than done. It might not be of any help but i went through a ten week assessment and i imagine other people here from the UK have gone through the same - what this translates to in the US is again something i hope you find out after further research.

You're getting the standard treatment for BPD anyway so i suppose an argument can be put forward that even without an exact diagnosis you're still going to be helped. That's a lot more than what others get so that's a positive at least

All anyone else can do here is support and encourage you in learning more. I wish you the best.

I honestly just bought that book yesterday! I am hoping it gives me better insight.

Thank you I tried to ask at my intake without directly using the diagnosis and the therapist completely skirted the subject. Hopefully I can get some answers. In my head, the diagnosis fits, and I just want to get some answers.

I know how that is. When I was 20, my mom (who is a nurse) offhandedly commented "The way you act sometimes, I think you have Borderline Personality Disorder or something".
Having no idea what that was, I opened up Google and proceeded to look it up. When I read the symptoms I can't even put into words the feeling that came over me. I knew for a fact that is what is wrong with me, the symptoms fit me to a tee.
I didn't need a mental health professional to tell me what I already new, but the confirmation was actually nice in a way cuz now I had answers.

Yes! I just want to know if I am right and that the feelings I am feeling are real and validated. I am literally making myself sick over it. I did the same thing about knowing I had depression when I was a teenager.

I have the "I hate you.." book but I am actually reading "BPD for Dummies" as my brain is just not grasping things easily.
