With Borderline Personality Disorder and Avoidant Personality Disorder. I've wondered about it for about a year now and my therapist officially diagnosed me... And, well, my therapist asked me to look up positive things and avoid the negative things about my diagnosis because there certainly are negative things about it being said. So, I guess I'm asking this: have any of you been successfully treated or had any positive change at all?

There was a gal here on PC that left this site for a bit, and then she started a thread stating she no longer has BPD. So yeah, it's possible. And if you're in DBT, I'm sure you have made some inprovement already

Symptoms are supposed to lessen over time although there have been plenty of folks here who have argued to the contrary. I definitely think that as time goes on we develop a better understanding of ourselves whether we've had help or not. Treatment isn't curative so progress depends quite heavily on your own level of commitment too but if you're trying really hard in DBT and not getting as far as you like there's always MBT, schema etc. Just reassuring you that there are options if you feel DBT isn't right.
Anyway it's not all bad...there are a lot of positive sides to BPD. We're very creative people, we know pain exceptionally well and therefore have great amounts of empathy and we have a passion in our souls that helps us feel the highs of life just as strongly as the lows. |

I have noticed some small changes in myself over the last 3 months since I was diagnosed. Changes do not have to be big, they just need to be going in the right direction.

When was 17-20 I would have been considered a very severe case of borderline. I won't go into specifics because it's difficult for me to talk about, but I was very out of control. Around the age of 20 I decided I didn't want that to be who I was anymore and made positive changes in my life. I stopped taking drugs and drinking so heavily (I haven't completely stopped either unforunately but I lessened it an immense amount), I got better control of my anger, and I begin to think about things before I acted on them.
I am now considered in the high functioning category of borderline. It's still there of course, and I still struggle daily, but change can be made if you work hard at it!
