For me the most troubling trait of BPD has to be the identity disturbances. Really not knowing who I am and always seeming to play a sort of role or fit into a mentality that I have seen elsewhere. When I hear the message 'be yourself' I have trouble as I just don't seem to have a natural personality or even mindset. I find the way I act is often also based on my mood and anxieties (if that makes sense) not on who I naturally am.

For those of you who have or are receiving professional treatment how did your therapist address this particular aspect of BPD. It is not too hard to understand how they would treat mood problems but a lack of identity seems difficult to treat and quite frankly it puzzles me. I would be very interested to hear your explanations on how this particular area is dealt with and addressed.

it is a crucial area for me as if you don't know who you are and you don't love yourself as a result how can you form meaningful relationships with other people?
