For a long time now I thought I may have BPD but of course I don't want to diagnosis myself so I got a therapist. After only about 20 minutes of talking my therapist told me I have major depressive disorder, social anxiety, avoidant personality, and general major anxiety. (also she said I have some anger control problems)
She immediately threw out of the idea of Bi-polar or BPD within our first meeting and said she doesn't think i have those, even though we only talked for less than an hour. Now a few weeks later I have not brought it up just because I am afraid she will reject my curiosity about possibly having this. Tomorrow I will see her again and was wondering if it would be a good idea to bring this up? I am very nervous about this because it doesn't seem like she would want to diagnosis this even if I did have it. Also i don't want it to seem like I am telling her she did her job wrong but I don't feel I am getting the help i need. Is it stupid to bring this up or should i let it go? how do i bring this up? |

For me the diagnosis is not an issue, if you identify with BPD then it does not matter what your therapist says. From my understanding it is really only a psychiatrist that can diagnose you anyway. Whatever labels your therapist uses should not really effect your therapy in any way. A lot of therapies use CBT which should help you in some way. If you are interested in DBT then a good website is DBT Self Help
Oh, and welcome to the group.

If it is something that you're concerned about, I would bring it up. So you can receive the best treatment possible. I don't agree with her diagnosing you with ALL that after only talking for 20 min. I've had similar experiences, and still think BPD fits the best. Good luck!

well there are specific traits that can dismiss right away the idea of someone being or not bpd. and for her to make such diagnosis shes quite experienced? even though, she made clear she had been with u for just a little while so this dxs is not the "official". u can mention u thought u had bdp and see what she says.

It sounds suspect to me that someone would diagnose you with four disorders about talking to you for only 20 minutes. One would hope that a therapist would get to know more about you and your life before applying labels. But, I don't know the specifics of your situation, so this is just a thought.
