there's been a lot of trauma in my life the last 11 years. but none of it has happened to me (ex: my sister was raped by my closest guy friend, my best girlfriend was murdered, etc.) and i feel guilty for being depressed.
which makes my depression worse.

There is no need to feel guilty for being depressed, if it helps blame the chemicals in your brain... I know it's easier said than done...
But deep down you know you don't want to be depressed and if you could change it you would, so stop being hard on yourself... You are going through enough as it is so try and be kind to yourself....
I know it's not your fault and I hope you can see that.

Hi haley, you said it right there: "there's been a lot of trauma in my life the last 11 years". It may not have happened directly to you but it was a part of your life, you still experienced it in whatever way.
And if you were to say that you didn't actually care about the people these things happened to, you didn't care that those things happened to them then that would be different, but you did didn't you?? You no doubt felt some empathy, felt hurt for them, felt some of the aftermath of..............felt some of the effects of what happened for/with them, yes??
And if those experiences/feelings have contributed to your depression that just says that you're "normal". In fact it says more than that, it also says that you're a caring person and you should never "beat yourself up" for being that.
And wherever the depression has come from, you didn't ask for it, you didn't choose it. You deserve help and support just as much as anyone with depression as well as help/support with some of the things you've experienced/some of the things that might still be painful.
And..........we're here for you

Being newly diagnosed can be a little unsettling but I think in just a few days/weeks? you'll feel better knowing there is a name for what you've been feeling and a map to use to guide you. Best of luck and keep your chin up.
