Hey everyone,

This past year has been real tough. I passed the intake diagnosis process and got into a long term DBT program and was hoping you all could help me out a bit.

Any suggestions before I get into it?

Thanks,
Hd

I am glad you are doing the DBT. My suggestion is to take it seriously, work hard, and do your homework to the best of your ability. And stick with it! I went through DBT twice, plus regular therapy. After a long time of treatment, I am no longer considered to have BPD!!
Thanks for this!

Two things: keep an open mind about what you will learn and be patient; it takes time.

Be aware that it's not a magic wand - it takes a lot of hard work and perseverance. You might not suit it either so don't get your hopes up too high - if you don't want a treatment based on eastern philosophy then it's definitely not for you. If something doesn't make sense, ask questions - and keep on asking them until you get the answers you're looking for. All the best.

Yes to all of the above. It is most certainly worth the effort even if it doesn't "work" for you and it might not. But you will get a lot of time with therapists both privately and in that dreaded Group (it is easy after a bit) and that is wonderful. Happy for you. All the best.

Thank you for your suggestions and advice. I will make sure to take it seriously and work hard. I have had some DBT therapy, but in much shorter programs and it has helped more than anything else.

When I started DBT I didn't take it far enough and when I thought I was feeling better I slid back downhill. I wanted to feel better so badly that I convinced myself that I was OK. I don't know how you will know when you are cured. Maybe someone else knows? You might want to ask your therapists how they measure progress so you'll be able to monitor yourself. Hope this helps.

I agree don't get your hopes up too high. It did not work for me. It is geared for patients in their early 20s. That is the time you can turn your life around. At my age the only treatment I need are knock out pills so I sleep until I die.
