I am now close to 2 years doing DBT. I am still having to radically accept my days and hours. Nothing has changed in my life even though I have been trying to make "a life worth living". I am experiencing more depression because I realize with every new day I will just have to radically accept my day. I think I am also coming to the fact that DBT is not effective for an old lady like me. It is really for the young. If anyone above the age of 50 is considering this therapy I would highly disagree that it is worth the time money and pain. There is no research showing the effectiveness of DBT with older BPD patients.

DBT is not for everyone.
I got the diagnosis of BPD last year at 56. Yes, easier with knowledge, but hard on a daily basis. I am starting DBT in the next month or two. I am hopeful.

Thanks for this, dancinglady. DBT has been suggested to me in the past. I don't have a BPD diagnosis. However, the reading I have done has convinced me that, when I was younger, I could have been given that diagnosis. I'd have to say that, from my perspective as an older person, I don't believe the mental health service system has much at all to offer us older folks. I take an SNRI & that's pretty-much it.

I live in a small town, so despite my numerous attempts at getting into a program, I couldn't find one that was open to new patients. Anyway, I've learned to make my life better without therapy ... it wasn't easy, but I know it's certainly possible. |

Hi dancinglady
Thank you for sharing this with us. I'm sorry to hear DBT is not working for you. That's a bitter pill to swallow. Look after yourself and do the things that you can do. Take care. |
