Moodycow, I have completed a Stepps course. I did learn more strategies and the people I have seen since the course feel it has helped them. I am repeating the course myself to help me remember the bits that I didn't remember so well last time.

You don't have to share intimate stuff, the course is about the here and now, not raking up the past. It is a combination of teaching information and going home and working on the skills taught.

In my area they don't do the course with individuals as the majority of the benefit is supposed to be listening to what others say. My friend certainly agrees with that.

Two people from my group have chosen to repeat the course because it helped and they want to consolidate what was learned first time.

That doesn't get round the difficulty of sitting in a room in a group, but the aim of the course is to learn to be able to cope more easily with such intense emotions and live more comfortably with them.
Many of my group including me at times, used medication to help cope with their anxiety so they could learn from the course.

I'm terrified of any kind of relaxation but the psychologist wants me to try to tolerate it as part of the learning. And some from my group just sat and listened right until the very end of the course, then worked one to one with psychology afterwards to help them use what they learned.

I hope I haven't scared you even more, it is worth it if you can do it, though people found the benefits didn't start till week 6 or so as the first few are getting to grips with stuff so persistence paid off in the end.

I'm sorry the prospect is so frightening. Hugs and whatever else caring and encouraging I can send. Good luck whatever you decide.
Thanks for this!
