Your emotions are out of control? What brings you down and back to a logical place?
I'm playing with a few techniques, one I got from my new therapist. It was originally to take my "target" abuser and put them in a box so that I will function, not think about them and not have flashbacks. So I thought, why can't I do this with emotions? When unwanted or intense emotions start to spiral out of control, I put them in my internal emotions box and say, "I can't deal with you right now. I can cry later. Right now I need to focus on work." Otherwise I'd be a crying mess at work. This seems to help because you take control again. And it always snaps me out of a crying spell and lets me focus my mind. The other idea was from my supervisor and therapist who said, "Bring yourself to a peaceful place." So I envision Ireland and play Irish music in my head. Whatever brings you peace. Music and imagery tend to be very powerful.

I either sleep , pray, ring someone or go to my imaginary safe haven. But when my emotions are really out of control I like to have a good cry and let it all out but I understand you can't do that at work.
My emotions haven't gotten out of control for a while now . I think my meds are helping with that . Don't get me wrong I have tons of other issues, anxiety, stress, lonilyness , that emty feeling, worthlessness. But my emotions have been pretty steady for a while . I remember very well when they were out of control, unbelievably out of control, I was drinking a lot at the time . so I don't drink now at all Sent from my GT-S6810P using Tapatalk |

I have implemted some techniques I learned in an anxiety app called What's Up (though there are many and are free) the best breathing exercise that works best along with the best metaphor that works best, for me, which is imaging my body floating on my back on water and that stops all of my shaking, my heart slows, my mind slows; it helps at work. I also bought a DBT workbook that Im currently going through: Amazon.com: The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook: Practical DBT Exercises for Learning Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation & ... Tolerance (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook) (9781572245136): Matthew McKay, Jeffrey Thats also helping but not far along in ot enough to help a lot (on chapter 2) so those are my things. Would love to hear of other ideas!

I take klonopin. It helps to level me out. I, also, use deep breathing exercises.

Here is a non medicine way
Here is a way to deal with emotional overload. Go to the grocery store buy some root vegetables butternut squash potatoes parsnips go to library find a stew recipe peel and chop mindfully. Does wonders for getting emotions under control. |

Hey ~ whatever works, as long as it doesn't hurt others! It can certainly be hard...I know. I cannot think of anything helpful left to say. Just wanted you to know that you are not alone.

Personally, watching episodes of a favorite TV show calms me down. I'm not sure if it's because of the familiarity or a sense of closeness to the characters, but it's very effective at taking me out of my head. Anything that will distract you (in a healthy way) is a good option!

I practice mindfulness when my emotions seem to start spiraling out of control. I take myself out of my head and observe the world around me and inside of me. No judgement, just observation. It seems to be working out well, but it's not the easiest thing in the world to do.
I also have hydroxyzine for anxiety just in case, but I prefer not to take them unless if I absolutely need to. |
