I’ve been in DBT for about a year now and I feel like I’m hitting a wall with the skills. The constant controls I have in place to keep BPD under control has great increased my social anxiety. I am constantly rehearsing what to say in social situations and have been feeling crippling social anxiety. From class presentations to ordering at a restaurant, I can’t seem to get enough of a handle on my sense of self to ever be comfortable. It’s exhausting and being perfectly alone in my own home is the only thing that provides relief. Friendships don’t feel natural all conversations are strained. It’s beginning to make me physically nauseous and I know it's time for a long term solution. Does anyone have any methods or certain skills they like to go to when they feel this anxiety rising?

Hi limegreenlady,
I have practiced DBT as well and found it helpful but like you I still seem to have social anxiety. I started practicing ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) about 2 years ago and have found that it has worked even better for me than DBT. You may want to read about it. The part about acceptance, mindfulness, and defusion from thoughts and feelings have helped me quite a bit. Take care - Detroitguy. |
