What kind of parents would cause borderline personality disorder? My teen thinks they have this?

I've read that it's all about parental 'invalidation.' It happens when a parent tells a child their emotions are not right or that they don't think what they say they say they think. This creates an adult who cannot trust their inner experience or self-soothe.
The perceived wisdom is that parents are supposed to 'mirror' their kids emotions. I heard a mother doing that this week with her young child who was throwing a tantrum in the bookstore. The mother kept reassuring him that she could see he was upset. Something like that. I'm not claiming that my understanding of this is perfect. Just what i've gleaned from what i've read. |

I think it's an interaction between an individual's temperament and the environment. Sometimes it is a trauma, sometimes it is invalidation, sometimes it is a mismatch between the parents' temperament and the child's.
