Were you diagnosed with BPD?

I know it is a recognised condition but there is still a great stigma attached to it for many clinicians. Like for instance - there is no chronic cover for BPD on my medical aid, but there is for Bipolar so my psychiatrist uses the code for bipolar when I have to claim otherwise I wouldn't be reimbursed.

In fact I tried to find a medical aid that recognises this as an 'illness' but failed to do so.

I don't actually know why this is important to me.

Yes, I was diagnosed with it. It doesn't make much of a difference for me, because I've been diagnosed falsely with so many things that any positive benefit a diagnosis might have had was trashed for me.

Yes I was, quite a few years ago. My pdoc and T mainly focus on mitigating the symptoms so they don't put a heavy emphasis on the diagnosis.

I was diagnosed and my psychiatrist thankfully seemed to be one of the few clinicians who recognizes the severity of BPD. She made sure to point out that even though a lot of doctors did not initially believe it, BPD is biological, like bipolar. She was realistic with me and told me not to expect a cure and that there is no medicine created for BPD specifically, but that I can greatly improve my quality of life. I was glad that she didn't sugar coat it for me while still giving me hope. This diagnosis may have tons of stigma attached to it but I'm so glad that I was finally correctly diagnosed so that I could begin seeking the therapy I've needed for years that I had absolutely no clue about, including the disorder itself. So anytime my therapist mentions anything about disliking the BPD label itself, I remind her that if it weren't for that label, I wouldn't know to be there! She always agrees in the end. I really do hope the stigma surrounding BPD diminishes overtime.

Wish I could go to your psychiatrist.

I wish more psychiatrists like her existed and I'm hoping my new one will be like her. Doctors like her should be the norm!
