People mainly my therapist and my doctor keep hemming and hawing over BPD. My "BPD" symptoms start 7 to 14 days before my period and end 3 days after my period starts. I don't get why they are still considering BPD when it's clearly PMDD. I don't understand. I have not self injured since September 2015 I have very good self esteem I don't have big mood swings and I am able to control them I think before acting I use mindfulness I have a job which I'm dedicated to and in general I'm a very happy person who has everything going my way. I just get a certain way when I'm PMSing. I'm on a birth control where I only get my period 4 times a year. But lately I've been getting unscheduled ones and I can't always tell when their coming. I got mad at my doctor and asked him if he thinks I have BPD and he didn't answer. How can I have BPD when I don't have any of the symptoms?

I understand you completely. I have been diagnosed with pmdd and think I act like I'm borderline during that time- the rest of the month I am a different person. I think it also depends on the doctor since some don't believe the pmdd diagnosis, believing it to be sexist. Maybe you can keep a chart of your symptoms/behavior and show lyour therapist and doctor after a few months to illustrate how your symptoms are cyclical. You can also get a second opinion if you don't agree with your diagnosis. Some providers will take a very different approach to treatment if they believe it's a personality disorder.

Bozdickens, as an experiment, can you try not eating sugar during this two week time period? Including foods that turn to sugars in your system (carbs). No soda, fruit drinks, fruit, dessert, bread, etc.. Just meats, eggs, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Even if you have vegetable juice, make sure it has no fruits or sugars in it (like tomato juice). Basically, it's like Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet. (You can even buy a copy of that book for recipes, if you like.)
I know it sounds extreme and like some make-believe hippie cure, but I've done this and found I've never been more "normal." No mood swings, no impulsive behavior, minimal anger and I can completely control it, minimal sadness; instead, I just feel calm, consistent, and positive. Two weeks out of your life isn't much, and if it works, or helps, even, imagine the difference it could make on your life. For me to have zero mood swings in the several days leading up to my period is basically unheard of, yet no sugar, no moods. It does have to be two weeks though, as a trial. This is enough time to get the sugar out of your system and have your body readjust. |

Be careful though. ED sufferer here. can confirm people need carbs to function. Our bodies run on the stuff. You're better of trying lots of simple and natural food, mostly plants, whole grains, all the fruit you like, protein, fats in the form of avocado and nuts. |

I'm in a very similar situation. PMDD really, really sucks.
Mine does make me act out and become pretty irrational, it's actually not uncommon for me to end up under the care of a crisis team until it passes. I can understand how it'd look like BPD to outsiders, to be fair. I second the eating natural foods option. I tend to be a lot better when I'm eating clean and exercising. But it's the healthy eating that really helps me, especially berries, bananas and cashews/almonds. |

Hi guys this is my first post here and I came across this page when I was researching PMDD, I was relieved to read someone else talking about it, I think i suffer from this but have only discovered it in the last few days after a lifetime of family and for the last two years my boyfriend thinking I have BPD, I definitely have many BPD traits amongst other things but something just doesn't sit right with me about it, my episodes are intense and begin around five days to a week before my period and literally stop the day my period finishes like waking up from a dream, or a possession, you can remember most of what happened but it was like it wasn't you, when this isn't happening I do not feel the same triggers or rages in the way BPD is described but it's difficult to say when everything is mixed in with PTSD and other traumas and fears. What you all say about the clean eating resonates, I have done this at various times, no sugars, no junk, fresh juices and a lot of water and my mood was vastly and significantly improved....at the minute I am desperate to figure something out because I have fallen into a pit of this behaviour that has rippled out into my life and destroying everything, in those days i am so heinous and abusive that I cause so much trauma to my partner that the effects then continue into our relationship beyond the episode and the atmosphere and pain just gets worse before the next episode occurs. I am so distressed at the pain I am causing him and I have a young son as well.

I dont have PMDD, at least i dont think i do...but ive tried over and over to keep a clean diet but i struggle with it so much. I havent been officially diagnosed with ED but i know my eating patterns are disordered. The problem is food is my source of comfort, pleasure, entertainment. Ive tried to shift away to a healthier mindset and not rely on food but no matter what, i just keep going back to food. I know nutrition is so important and ive seen the difference in my body from dietary changes but i am never able to sustain them for too long.
