i am really interested to know how you all feel about the name, borderline personality disorder and also the new one that they seem to be trying to replace it with emotionally unstable personality disorder eupd i personally absolutely object to being labelled unstable and feel that it will do much to further reinforce prejudice against mental health .

I don't feel much either way to be honest about those labels (diagnoses?) - but yes, if I found out I'd been "diagnosed" with "EUPD" I wouldn't be delighted

I don't understand why they think it's an improvement.. i really don't know

A diagnosis/label is only useful if it's used to optimise treatment..

PS I wish all labels could be abolished and the bad doctors could be transformed into bears or cats

I don't mind the term "borderline" but I hate the "personality disorder" part of the name.

To me, borderline personality disorder is not descriptive and also makes it sound like your personality sucks so i don't like it. I've heard that 'emotional dysregulation disorder' is being considered. I like that. I sure would not like 'emotionally unstable personality disorder.' That's worse than borderline.

Crimsoncat,

I don't really know how I feel about the label at this point. Regardless, there is stigma now and there always will be stigma. Battling the beast is futile and stigma is attached to ALL mental illnesses, not just Borderline Personality Disorder.

Ultimately, humans need to GROW and expand their ability to empathize... Sometimes the only way a human being can empathize with a BPD sufferer is by personally experiencing BPD and all that it includes; thus gaining the hard-earned insight that follows from those particular challenging and very undesirable afflictions. (Many humans NEED to experience those "specific undesirable afflictions" BEFORE they are able to empathize...) Isn't that sad? [Aren't humans intrinsically good...?] Perhaps that is why minorities affected by oppression always seem to explode into a political movement before things change for the better... Just gotta get more people to empathize before things change... An unfortunate flaw in the human race I suppose. The thought is that a minority is no longer a minority, (because so many people are oppressed) and therefore, there is no choice but to change.

If only that process could be expedited... Luckily mental illness is the talk of the times. Hoping to God that things get better for each and every one of us. We deserve to feel understood, validated and loved; music and all; full package deal just the way we are, regardless of diagnosis...

Sorry, ranted.

The argument is that Borderline Personality Disorder has the most stigma of all mental illnesses, but how do we really know how to gauge that and even if we could, how do we know how it correlates to a label versus other variables... I think we need to ask ourselves, "where did the stigma about Borderline Personality Disorder originate," and, "is there (SOME) validity to it?" (And really asking ourselves this question honestly without judgment; just the facts...) I mean, lets face it, we can be a boatload of work for any professional. It must be very difficult to treat us effectively: maybe that is why so many professionals say that.... (Just a thought)

My point is: Whose to say that changing a label will make any difference (in regards to stigma) if our illness and symptomatology remains the same and unchanged over time...?

I think awareness is what needs to change, not the label. Then maybe there will be less ignorance and more empathy, compassion and support for us. If the label is changed, perhaps people will struggle to link the two labels (after it has been changed) and thus, less awareness will ensue. Maybe things could get worse? At least that is how I see it playing out. Maybe that is the idea: to create a fresh slate and hope that people won't realize the label change....

I was thinking about this some more and I agree with you... not only is EUPD not an improvement on "borderline" - it actually sounds more negative and stigmatising (imo)

How do we stop the NHS from rolling on, with all its blunders

Calling, all cats and bears

how do you feel about the name?
