Hello all,

I never even knew what TUMBLR was until this week! Some of the pictures and memes are so incredibly insightful and relevant to our suffering! I highly recommend others go on there and search BPD. Everyday people post new things and inspire each other to use skills. You can find people from all walks of life from all over the world; similar to the forums only it is more oriented to videos and pictures, not primarily writings. Some of it is definitely triggering, but a lot of it has been helpful for me.

Anyone else use Tumblr?

Thanks,
HD7970ghz

I'm sorry you went through that Spidytolerate! If you want to share, feel free. I think this is a good opportunity to spread awareness about the good AND bad!

Thanks,

I have personally found tumblr to be rather cringeworthy when it comes to mental illness.

Sure, some posts are fine, but among those posts are MANY posts in which young teenagers are self-diagnosing as BPD without ever having been given a professional evaluation because they think it's cool.

They like having the label and like being unique because of it instead of getting the help they need to recover (even though most of these kids likely don't have BPD and are simply experiencing emotional growing pains).

They use hashtags such as #actually borderline on their posts, sometimes announcing "do not reblog this if you do not have BPD" even though they themselves are self-diagnosing.

I have seen many self-diagnosers try to put down the people who are truly diagnosed with this illness because they were told to stop self-diagnosing and seek actual help.

That's my experience with BPD on tumblr but I'm glad if you haven't seen this side of it because it's disturbing!

I have seen that a bit yeah. There are thousands of tumblr blogs out there and some are just not fact based nor conducive to healing nor positivity. I just choose not to look at the super triggering stuff that is clearly not my cup of tea. On the flip-side, I have found really good tumblr blogs with daily DBT skills and journal entries from sufferers who inspire one another into a more positive direction. I can interact with a post and link what I resonate with to my own tumblr in hopes that other sufferers can feel less alone and better understood.

Interesting you talk about self diagnosis, however, I don't think that is exclusive to tumblr. I know people do that here as well. Definitely there is a sense of identity that comes from diagnosis but that is also true for people who have been diagnosed properly and accurately. I don't think that is all bad when it brings us together and allows us to actively pursue the proper treatment that is ascribed to our illnesses.

I am intrigued to hear more about what people think. Not everything is all bad on tumblr nor is it all good, rather, it is grey. A spectrum. Just like in therapy and when reading a book: take with you what is effective and leave the rest, doesn't mean you have to shy away from it altogether.

My fear of things such as those is not so much the blogs themselves as the commentary after. When nothing is monitored it can become very unhealthy and often does. Just my take on it though.

A valid point. I seem to see that most bloggers will delete or ban inappropriate comments on their tumblrs. I know I would.

Please don't rule out tumblr because there is inappropriate stuff, there is also a lot of helpful things!!! Just sift through until you find what resonates most.

There may be - but I also avoid places it is easy to get triggered.
