I'm exhausted and so very tired of this illness. Every time I think I'm making progress I take a step back into the chaos of this disease.

It is not an illness.

When a child’s emotional needs are not met and a child is repeatedly hurt and abused, this deeply and profoundly affects the child’s development. Wanting those unmet childhood needs in adulthood. Looking for safety, protection, being cherished and loved can often be normal unmet needs in childhood, and the survivor searches for these in other adults. This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors. |

![]() ![]() BPD is a personality disorder, which does indeed fall into the category of a mental illness, which is just as valid as any physical illness. I'm sorry you are going through a rough time. ![]() |

I understand how you feel. For a long time I felt I was taking 2 steps forward and 2 steps back. Just keep giving the best you've got.

I see "illness" as something physically wrong. I see BPD as a mental disorder that just is that. Its mental. The emotional deregulation is a learned behavior as poor coping skills that derived at an early age either due to environment or trauma. As an adult learning what actually are normal healthy coping skills is the key.

Does it really matter or are we just picking apart wording for no reason?
