I frequently read about the BPD feeling of being "empty." What does that mean?

I can't define this for you. Perhaps defining empty is like defining art... (I can't define it. But I know it when I see it.) Here are links to 6 articles, from PC's archives, that discuss the feeling of being empty:

It's the emptiness of understanding who you really are because of dysregulation of your self image and if you throw on top the emptiness of disassociation.

Disassociation is a way of coping with trauma that you don't want to feel, confront or accept by mentally removing yourself from the experience.

Therefore, you also rarely get the help you need to move forward or heal and possibly due to the dysregulation of your self image or if you're disassociated you may not understand you're a person that even has BPD. It's possible to disassociate by viewing yourself as an entirely different person or maybe being a different age.

There's also the emptiness of not having many friends either due to the instability of your relationships due to the illness or not having a support system because BPD is a very hard thing for people to understand and accept and even most mental health professionals tend to stigmatize, become frustrated and give up on people with BPD

Like there's an abyss inside and also outside and you're falling forever into it.

For me, feeling empty is an improvement. It's when I'm numb to everything. No joy, no rages.

For me it's an unbearable feeling of nothingness, that I try to fill with alcohol, relationships, and anything that produces any form of instant mood boosting. It never lasts long though. I hope one day I won't feel so empty inside.
