It seems that when I sleep long hours, I feel stiff in the morning: lower back pain, pains in my shoulders and in my thighs. When I sleep less, I have no pain! Does sleeping long cause pain or is it just me?

I have the same thing Joe....

If I'm in bed more than 6-7 hours, I have a heck of a time getting up and moving....ouch ooch dang.....hurts like the dickens, my back, shoulders, elbows, knees and thighs sometimes.

Not sure exactly what causes it all, but it sure is a "pain" LOL no pun intended.

So, I guess the answer is to get up before spending more than 6-8 hours in bed eh?
Thanks for this!

Sleeping for long periods of time can cause the fluids of your body to accumulate around your joints, hence the stiffness you experience when you first wake up in the morning... I have RA (arthritis) and it can take me any where from one to three hours upon wakening for the day before I am able to function properly due to the stiffness, swelling and pain in my body.
Thanks for this!

Mornings (or whenever you rise from a "night's" sleep) is tough for chronic pain sufferers.

It's a terrible issue, especially when hit with a fatigue flare ...
staying in bed trying to get the rest one needs
hurts as much as it helps.

My pain rarely lets me sleep more than 4 hours at a time anyway ...
but those first steps are like I'm 100 years old!

I know when it came to "just" arthritis for my mom, it was her hands and she made herself use them daily with difficult crocheting and knitting!
It wasn't just for 19 and 20th century women! When she used her hands this way, she could prepare her meals, and even bowl. Once she quit moving like this, her capabilities went down hill.

I have myofascial pain issues in my hands (and not looking forward to the possible arthritis issues mom had) and I wear wrist splints.
Well, I'm supposed to wear them all the time to protect my wrists.
But I don't wear them when I push myself to do something, because the splints would help me cross the boundary of too much. When I don't wear them, I push my activity until I can't... and then put them on for support when I stop.
I also have braces for my knees.
I have one for my low back too.
Wish there was something that would help whole bodies at one time, don't you?

((((((((((( Sky & all who suffer with chronic pain )))))))))))

I have chronic pain as well, but I have to say, it probably isn't as bad as what ya'll are going through. I would say that 99% of the time, I just force myself to do what I have to do. It just takes longer sometimes to get the body moving in the morning. It kind of stinks that I have to get up at least 2 hours before I have to get out the door and really do much of anything.

I completely understand about the pain and then having a flare of fatigue as well. Darned if you do, and darned if you don't. Sky, I remember my grandmother doing the same thing for her arthritic hands by knitting and crocheting.....it's really the best to keep them moving and to help keep away the swelling. Let's hope you missed that gene and will be ok in that department

I started this thread and it's so comforting to know that I'm not the only one suffering from muscular pain in the morning. Yet it's not so comforting to know we all have pain when we get up in the morning!

I don't know about anyone else here, but this morning pain sure makes me feel much older than I am. Makes me wonder how I'll feel when I do get that old hehehe.

I'm on cymbalta 60mg which helps some. It seems, after a year of being on it, it's not helping as much as it did before. I will also take an occasional 800mg ibuprofen when I'm really having difficulties during the day. That too, will take the rough edge off for awhile.

Mornings are interesting....that's for sure

I hate even getting up in the middle of the night to pee, that can be tough being stiff and achey the first few long steps. Being still for more than 4 hours (sitting at the computer/work, long drive, etc.) literally causes your body to change so I can see where sleeping would do the same. I changed around how I took some meds and I try to be more active during the day and that has helped me a bit.

Trying to stay active during the day helps with back and muscular pain!

You definitely feel older when you are stiff and have pain in your body! I can relate to that!

There are mornings I want to scream because I got to get moving and get things done. But usually after 2 hours or less when I get moving it goes away, if not, then I reach in my medicine cabinet for Bayer aspirin for back and muscular pain. It works for me.
