I have this humongous pain in my left ankle and foot. It is so tender that it hurts to put pressure on it at all, and hurts all the way across the top of the ankle, on the ankle itself, and feels like there is a bone or something sharp that keeps poking the inside of my ankle. The pain radiates up my leg on the outside about midway up to the calf. I don't know what else to do. I take heavy duty pain meds now, and this pain isn't going away at all. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

It is very important that you go to a Dr and let him or her check your ankle. Please do this as soon as possible and let us know how you're doing. Please take good care of yourself. ![]()

I'm going back to my dr to see if she will refer me to an orthopedist. My foot and ankle hurt constantly, and it goes up the outside of my leg too. I'm thinking it is muscular, except that it feels like something is sticking into my ankle, and my foot feels like I have a stress fracture (had one before so I know what they feel like). I just hope we can get to the bottom of what is wrong with it since I don't want to go on with this pain. My appointment is next week Monday. I can't wait. This pain has gone on for long enough. Thanks for all your concern. It is appreciated.

I am hoping for a correct diagnosis for you and a treatment. I have been in pain in my ankle for almost a year! 2 Podiatrist came up with two different diagnosis- none of the treatment worked. 2 Pain specialist came up with 2 more ideas, still waiting for appt next week to find out what I can do. I am not giving up!

Everyone shrinks a little bit as the body ages. Don't worry about shrinking very much because you won't. It would just be maybe an inch or two. That's all. I hope your foot gets better very soon. Hugs, Jan ![]()

Bone spurs, arthritis while not great are at least things that can be treated! I see my pain doc in a couple hours to find out what (if found) is causing my pain. I saw my PCP yesterday, her interpretation of the tests was that it was Fibro pain and unfortunately we haven't found anything that has worked for me yet. I am hoping that the pain doc will come up with something that I haven't tried.

fearful...have you tried Lyrica yet? Just wondering, but know that I take it and it works well enough for me so that things aren't so painful. Here's hoping you will find something that works for you.

Pain specialist is a MD- she is the one that told me the 'Dr. B' "podiatrist" ISN't a MD!!- I re-read BOTH cards from two different podiatrist- they both say "dr. X"- nowhere on the card or in the office does it have their credentials to say they aren't MD's- I have seen that they are "fellows" of the american podiatric association- My understanding is that "fellows" are MDs with specialized training by the sub-category. Found out this isn't the case!
WOW! called the orthopedist- they can get me in Next Tuesday AM. With the foot and ankle specialist, who is also an MD and surgeon. If the second podiatrist I saw has the right Dx, then I need surgery to release a trapped nerve(similar to carpal tunnel). IF I am right and I have torn tendons/ligaments, then I may not need the surgery- just a cast. Whatever the outcome, I just want to do something that will clear up my pain! well, I went to the foot specialist yesterday, and he said it may be a torn tendon judging from the swelling, and put my foot/leg in a boot...I must admit with the boot on my ankle feels slightly better, but the swelling is still there even when I take the boot off for the night. So I have to go get an MRI on my foot, and then we will talk about what to do...he said it will probably be surgery...sigh...I'm not looking forward to that, but if that is what needs to be done, then do it so I can get on with my life. I really need to get going with my diet, and exercise, but I can't when I am wearing this stupid boot. It is very heavy and clumsy. and it slows me down a lot.
So, I am going to start the diet, and then start with the exercise once the foot is done and taken care of. I HAVE to take of the weight, because it is really hindering me from being able to keep up with my daughter, who is 14. I need to lose about 100 pounds, more or less. So please pray for me, that I can get healthy. I don't want to end up in the ER because of some heart problem or other weight-associated problem. Thanks. Yahna

Podiatrists are a bit different from chiro's; podiatrists can operate and are very knowledgeable about feet but only feet, whereas medical doctors know about all the body. I would equate podiatrists to dentists. But that's why your doctor sent you to a podiatrist, to see if it was just a foot problem. However, since your problem turns out to be related to the rest of your body/leg/tendons/nerves, that's why they all had you go to a ortho doctor.

I didn't go to a podiatrist, I went to a foot and ankle specialist...MD...my family doc wouldn't send me to a podiatrist because she trusts my assessments of my body I give to her. Now I am just waiting for the MRI, and whether or not I will need surgery. Sorry if what I said got you confused.

I got in with the MD- orthopedic surgeon specializing in ankle and foot issues- for the first time in two years somebody actually took an x-ray of my foot (arthritic changes, but not enough to cause the pain I have). I have an MRI scheduled, then have to have another EMG (the MD said it must be done by a neurologist, not just a pain doc); not looking forward to that- the last one was quite painful and made the pain much worse for a couple of days! We will see what the tests show! I am praying its not another "nothing fixable" situation- I am tired of being in pain.

ok...just had my MRI yesterday, so will be seeing my foot specialist the beginning of February...seems like such a long time away...but it's the first available date he had...so I get to wear this blasted boot until then at least...the swelling is still there even with the boot, but the pain isn't as bad since my foot isn't as badly in pain...I can't wait until my foot gets better, cuz it's botherin the heck outa me...
frog...i hope that all goes well with you too...having foot pain is no picnic...and the position that the MRI people put my foot in was so painful that I couldn't bearly stand it...I hope that your foot won't hurt you as much afterwards...and I hope they get to the bottom of your pain as well... Jewels- I too now have to wait until Feb. Had my MRI today- forgot my klonopin at home! OMG- I had the other foot done two years ago so I knew what I was in for. Tempurpedic doesn't have metal in it does it? Could they use some on the table??? Oh and how many patients are only 19 inches wide??; meanwhile they found out that my neck will need surgery- so I may be looking at surgery on two different parts of my body!

Frog--I'm sorry about the neck...that is no fun...we have lots of pain in neck too but right now we are dealing with the foot so can't deal with anything else...and then it's the breast biopsy, so there isn't any peace for a while yet...I hope that you will find out what is going on with you too...and that the pain you experience now will just be a memory when you get done...

well, i promised i would keep you informed about my foot and all the pain in it...went to the foot dr specialist...he ordered an MRI...and now, having seen him since the MRI, i am having surgery on the 24th. They are doing 7 different things to my foot...and he said the long term is 3 months on up...so we will see how things go...hopefully it won't take that long and i can get on with things sooner than anticipated...among other things they are putting in a plate and screws...cleaning out all the arthritis...cleaning out an abscess...repairing ligaments...and on and on it goes...LOL...at least my foot will hurt for a reason and then will forget the pain when it gets well...depending on when I get done with the left one, i might be able to do the right one this year too...but i am thinking i may want to wait a year before i get the other one done just to be sure the left foot is fully recovered...so say some prayers for me on the 24th...i would appreciate it immensely!

Jewels- I know where you are coming from on the "at least there is a reason". I will keep you in my prayers on the 24th!
Meanwhile after the MRI I had to have an EMG on my R foot- the doc didn't want the one I had done in Dec! How did I forget how much pain you are in???? I find out the results on the foot next friday- I think the worst thing will be "there isn't anything to fix"- it hurts- fix it! I go to the neurosurgeon on March 5th for a first opinion, Then I have to schedule with another one for a second opinion- if they think their going to cut into my neck I want to make sure they aren't scalpel happy- I went through that with my gallbladder- yup it needs to come out, no more pain- 6 months later, oh it is and infection in your LIVER! I am holding together pretty good for all that is going on; the tools I have been given are helping, but I believe the lamictal is working more- why couldn't they have given me this 3 years ago? Life goes on. I will update as life unrolls.
