A member just mentioned that she was having trouble including a quote (or some of the text from one) when replying to a post. If what she sees on her screen is the same as what I see on mine, the rest of the post she's replying to shows up as a quote but any quotes within it are simply omitted from the composer window.

I rely on the "Reply With Quote" feature only so far; I've gotten used to setting up my quotes by hand whenever necessary. Sometimes I'll highlight the text I'm quoting and use the Quoting from a quote "Wrap [ QUOTE ] tags around selected text" button but I'm also quite accustomed to setting up my QUOTE and /QUOTE <--- (brackets omitted on purpose) tags entirely by hand.

For anyone who's interested (and hasn't already figured it out for themselves): using the QUOTE and /QUOTE pair gives you a plain quote like this:

Using QUOTE=somebody;postnumber gives you a quote with a name and a little bitty box that's a link to the post the quote came from:

Post number?! What's a post number? Where do I find the post number? Why, I just go to the post I want to quote from, click the button as if I'm going to reply to it (with quote), copy the info from the resulting QUOTE tag, paste it into wherever I'm really quoting it, and back out of the other Reply window without posting.

Often the quote in a post is from another post in the same thread. In that case, I can click the Quoting from a quote "Multi-Quote This Message" button(s) at the bottom(s) of the post(s) where the quote(s) originally appeared, then reply (with quote) to the post where it was quoted (and edit the resulting composer window to include only the portions I want to quote in the order I want to quote them).

By the way, you can stack quote tags at least two levels deep if you like (I've never tried going deeper):
Quote:
This is a quote
Quote:
This is a quote within a quote

Good luck! I'm going to follow this thread for a while in case there are any questions, but the way I'd answer them would be no different from the way I'm inviting the rest of you to answer them for yourselves: try it and see!

Okay, here's a related question. When I push the Multi-quote this message button, it seems like nothing happens.. well, no, it turns yellow, actually...what do I do next? I would REALLY like to figure out how to multi-quote something.

It turns yellow for you? It turns red for me. I'm guessing that we might be using different appearance ("skins") settings or something.

I think you'll find that after you've pushed the Multi-quote button on one or more posts, when you click a Reply button those posts will show up as quotes in the composer window. All you have to do then is delete the parts you don't want to quote, arrange the quotes the way you want them, and type in your end of the conversation.

I think the multi-quoting feature only works within the same thread. If you wanted to quote from somewhere else, you'd need to copy-paste the text and put the QUOTE and /QUOTE tags around it yourself.

--------------------
Edited to add:
Since I wrote that, I've discovered that you can click the multi-quote (Quoting from a quote) button on posts even when they're in different threads. If the posts are from the same thread, the system will paste them into the reply box automatically. If they're from different threads, it'll ask. I haven't used the multi-quote feature for a while so I don't remember exactly when/how it asks.

I went upthread and clicked Multiquote on pachy's post, then came down and clicked Reply on yours. That gave me a composer window with:
pachy's post in [ QUOTE ] tags

Your post (without the quotes) in [ QUOTE ] tags
Then I highlighted the pachy quote, [ QUOTE ] tags and all, and cut-and-pasted it where I wanted it inside your [ QUOTE ] tags:

I could've done pretty much the same thing by copy-pasting just the text of the posts and putting [ QUOTE ] tags around it by hand but Multiquote saved me a few steps -- and threw in author names and post numbers for free.
Thanks for this!

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
