I just recently downloaded the program called utorrent to download songs and videos off the net. Well it downloads songs fine but everytime I download a video file it won't open the file. It keeps showing one of those blank pages with the page folded over and my windows won't open it. I know before when I used another program I had to download a program called divx player to play videos after I downloaded them, so I tried that and it still wouldn't work. Ever since I reformatted my computer I've been having so many problems. One of my friends suggested I download a program called VLC media player that plays all types of media files, so I downloaded it and it still won't play the video files that I download. Any tips or advice on what to do? I'm stumped here. I never had any problems before when I used bit torrent when I downloaded video files. It's only been since I reformatted my computer that I've been having a lot of problems. Maybe I'm still missing something that I need to download in order to play them? Any suggestions?

I'm not an expert, but maybe you need a plugin or another kind of file to update your player. I use GOM Player (it's free, and you can download it here: http://download.cnet.com/GOM-Media-P...html?tag=mncol). Also, don't torrent files have to be unpackaged, like .zip files do? I'm not familiar with them, so I'm not sure.

amanda_1981... im not prentending to be an expert, but to download from 'utorrent' or 'extratorrent' or 'isohunt' ,.... you have to first download 'bitlord'. then when you go to download click on open file.
good luck

OK, I've been torrenting for a looooong time. I use utorrent as well. It seems that the files you are dl'ing aren't video files because I use VLC to view too. Everything is just fine. And I reinstalled XP last night. You need to know what the extension is for the file you are trying to view. Try this:
Navigate your browser to the folder that has one of the video files. I'll assume you are using Windows XP for your operating system. In the tools menu choose Folder Options. Once in the Folder Options dialog box click the View tab. Scroll down to where you see the check next to "Hide extensions to known file types." Uncheck it. Then look at the file you want to view. It should show .avi or .wmv or some type of video file extension at the end of the file name. What is the extension? If it is a form of video then there may be something else wrong. I can help further but I need to know what the file type is. I willl subscribe to this thread so I recieve notification of posts. ummm....there is no check to subscribe shown here. Go ahead and PM me if you need to. I edited this post...I changed Show extensions to Hide extensions...sorry for the typo!

Thanks everyone for your help! I must be REALLY dense because turns out all I had to do was actually go into the VLC media player and then search for the video file from there. Previously, I had just been clicking on the video from the UTorrent program and trying to play it straight from UTorrent, which was my problem. It didn't occur to me to play it from the VLC program. (I swear, sometimes I am sooo slow!!). Thank you all for your help and advice.. I will keep your suggestions in mind if I have future problems!
Thanks again! |

For future reference (or for anyone else who's interested): "Thread Tools," in the blue bar near the top of the page.
