Is it possible to remove tags other people put on your threads?

Wow...I didn't even know other members could add tags to a thread made by someone else until reading this. Sounds like a recipe for trouble

The tags are not about the thread's content or the people responding. Anyone can add a couple tags to a thread so they can organize threads they like/want to keep organized. A tag I like for my purposes (if I'm collecting all tags labelled "Perna" for example) isn't going to necessarily work for yours. The whole purpose of tags is so people can organize stuff they like/want to use on the Net for themselves and find answers quickly. Someone tagging posts you start is a good thing, it means it is important to them.

I Have no idea what this is about. Would someone be so kind as to explain what, where, why, how a "tag" is added to a post or thread; why it is done, how it is done?

What are tags?

Tags are a useful way to search for threads with similar subject matter and content. This complements the normal search system, which searches only for certain words or phrases and/or posts by specific users.

To use tags, you add words or phrases to threads to help describe the content. For instance, if the subject matter is 'photography' then you can add the tag 'photography' to the tag list. But you could also add tags like 'digital image', and 'camera' (depending, of course, on the nature of the thread).

This will categorize this thread with all other threads that have matching tags, whether or not they have the word 'photography' in them.

Who adds the tags?

Tags are initially added to threads by the user who started the thread. Other users may also be able to add and remove tags.

How do I use tags?

Tags are displayed in a box near the bottom of a thread page. Clicking on a tag will allow you to view other threads that have the same tag - and which may be related. Clicking on the word 'Tags' in the top of the box will take you to an overview page with a 'tag cloud.'

This cloud allows you to see which tags are the most popular - the larger the word, the more times it has been used on threads within the board. There is also another tag cloud on the advanced search page that shows you the tags that have been searched for (or clicked on) the most.

Seems there is still an unnamed person(s) that continues to tag my threads inapropriately.
Like on one thread, I asked for advice on how to make friends. Someone tagged it with phrases that I found offensive and had absolutely nothing to do with the support I was reaching out for.
Frankly, it's abusive and it's hurtful.

I have reported the tags to admin, but I still think it would be better if the thread owner could also remove the tags.

You can remove the tags. Just click edit tags and then remove them

That is very useful to know George as tags can be annoying and tbh I didn't have a clue what they meant until I read this thread.

You can remove tags from threads that you started regardless of who added the tags. That seems fair enough since some find them useful and others seem to use the tag feature maliciously.

I have felt this way that the tags are inappropriate to which someone has tagged my posts-- I know others explained that the "humor" was not of the situation but still to see my post that hurts me and trying to get support and someone has put some sort of humor associated with it is hurtful. And I can't seem to remove the tag either.

What is more annoying is that people go around tagging but can't even comment on the thread-- I have one up right now that has tags but no responses - grr... whatever though-

I don't see any names- just tags.

I don't think there is away to stop the tagging nor do I think tagging should stop- I just think they should be approved in some fashion prior to being put up on a thread... Another out look from someone else other than the tagger or poster, could very well stop for misunderstanding hurt-- which seeing with this thread I am not the only one with that.

I can see someone has tagged this thread, I might be dumb but what is the point in tagging? Maybe the topic starter should be given the option if they can approve tags if that is allowed.

The point of tagging is that it groups those threads you put that tag on so you can find those posts easily again. Click on the word Tags and type in "testing" without the quotes and this thread and three other about "testing" come up.

Perhaps for this site's purposes the tag "section" could be controllable in one's profile (or on the page) so it could be turned off, like one can click the arrows for whole forums and only concentrate on what one wishes to? That way people who do not wish to use tags or are disturbed by them could just "ignore" them.

George H and I tagged this thread on purpose to test if I can remove them or not, since I started this thread. The tools do not let ME delete the tags, only the one I created which says "nope". That is where the problem is for me.
I have had several threads tagged up with phrases like "delusional thinking", "narcissism", etc. They were posts meant to reach out for support, and the tags were hurtful.

This is why there needs to be a way to avoid it.. I can ignore people, but they can still read and reply to my threads AND tag them...
if the mean tags like that could not get approved in the first place, then I wouldnt have to feel so hated and rejected here on PC.

I'm sorry it didn't work for you. And I'm not sure why I was able to remove tags that someone else placed on one of my threads. Maybe it was a fluke. Try adding some tags to one of my threads and we'll test that out if you'd like.

I have to apologize ... apparently removing those tags from my thread was a fluke so disregard that other post. Insideout and I have both tried removing tags from our posts and neither of us were able to do it. Sorry
I saw a really inappropriate and unsupportive tag on a thread recently. I guess we can live with it...

If it's that inappropriate/unsupportive, you might want to use the Report button () to let us know about it. Cleaning up tags is one of the things we do.

LOL FooZe the thought that came to my head is I probably bother you admins enough with asking deleting threads, editing threads, and whatever else... sound whining to ask for a tag to be removed

It's not whining -- it's your right if it's your thread.

Simply hit the "report" button on your post and report the tag you'd like removed. It'll get done as soon as a moderator sees it.

We may certainly revisit this issue in the future -- allowing members to delete tags on their posts themselves -- if some members abuse the tagging feature.
