I read the rules and guidelines and I came across this as one of the things not appropriate for this forum:
-Copyrighted materials that you do not own the rights to. So is it okay for me to have a avatar and signature that is off a movie, Google or something? Sorry, I just want to make sure it's okay, I don't want to get into trouble on the first day here. |

Welcome. It's a good question. I posed this question once regarding the posting of song lyrics and the general consensus was that it was not right to do so. Even in the creative forum. Pity because a lot of song lyrics say what I can't and I would love to post them.

Yes, we're governed by copyright law here. It does provide for exceptions called "fair use." Under those exceptions, you're welcomed to post small excerpts (e.g., parts of a song lyric, like a single verse, are fine).
As for images, again, many images are copyrighted, so you have to be aware of whether it is or not before you use it. You are welcomed to use an image you're not completely sure of, however, and if we receive notice it is copyrighted, we may be asked to remove it. Sorry it's not clear cut yes or no, but that's the state of copyright. Best, DocJohn
