By request, some members have asked for "private" social groups. We have now enabled that option.

Existing social group owners can change their social group to private by clicking on "Edit Group" at the bottom of the social group's main page. There you will see a checkbox option, "Must join to view content" (which includes messages and pictures).

This option does not affect social group forums -- which remain viewable by any logged-in member (non-logged in members and visitors do not see social group forums). Only members of their social group can post to a social group forum.

DocJohn
I'm kind of new here and not sure I understand.
I think what you are saying is: If our social group gets large enough to become a forum, then any logged-in member of PsychCentral can view the social group forum, but only members of the social group can post.

Do I understand that correctly?

What if the social group is set up so that only members can read it; are posts in the linked forum also only visible to members?

I am in a social group that has created a forum, maybe it was just me, but I was under the impression only members of that social group could see that forum, and what was posted... . Am I confused?

Guess this is like what Pachy has asked...

Yes I think this is what DocJohn is saying. Anyone logged in used to be able to view a social group and now they can't if it is private. Would you like me to test it pachy, I am not a member of any group. Give me a link to the social group and I'll let you know if I can view it.

This is a link to a social group forum, of which the social group is an invite-only group. The social group posts can be read by any PC member. I am not sure if the social group forum posts can be read by any PC member:

Thanks, peg. I did not know that (even though I created the group).

Would I be able to just get some clarifications, please?

We recently started an invite only group. My questions are....

1. If we hit 30 members, will it go to a forum view?
2. If we hit 30 members, and it goes to a forum view, will it be public for anyone to access or will only invited members be able to see the forum.

Please help! This is causing a stir in our growing group as we wish to remain a closed unit but have enough members to be in a forum set-up.

Thanks!!

A forum for your social group is optional. When you reach 25 members you can request a forum if you decide you want one. The social group itself doesn't change or go anywhere, but it gets a new link at the top of the page:
Visit the forum of this group.
The last time I checked, anyone could see (and read) the forums of Public social groups but only members could see the forums of the other kinds. To post in any social group or its forum, you need to be a member of that social group.

I think the above additions are correct.

I'm still unclear.

Anyone can read the forum of a PUBLIC group, but PRIVATE groups with a FORUM addition can only be read and accessed by members of that PRIVATE group?

Only logged in members of PC can read any social group. Browsers, who are not logged in, cannot even see the social groups. They would not even know they exist.

Social groups can be public, or invite-only.

Invite-only groups can decide that only members of that group can read messages on that social group.

Social groups may have social group forums, and if the group is invite-only of either kind, only members of that social group can read messages on their social group forum.

I think this is correct.

For example, I created a forum which is now invite-only. All logged-in PC members can read messages on the social group, but they cannot see messages on the social group forum which is linked to it.

You're right, pachy. Sorry, I wasn't even thinking of non-PC members (nor PC members who might be browsing the forums without logging in).

Till now, we've had three kinds of social groups that I know of: public, moderated, and invite-only. I take it that private will be a fourth kind.

As far as I can tell, any logged-in PC member can see and read the forums of public social groups but you have to be a member of the social group to even see the forum of a moderated or invite-only group listed on the Forums at Psych Central index page.
