I was wondering if there could be a forum dedicated to issues of diversity, which means all kinds of things of course, but specifically things like race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, cultural differences. There is a forum for queer and gender, but those could also be included because some have the issues overlap.

Multiculturalism is now a requirement for any training in psychology and seems that a forum as large as Psych Central might be able to have a forum dedicated to these kinds of issues.
Thanks for this!

Why do we need to be splitting people up even more than necessary?

I don't think the word 'queer' is a very diverse term, I could be wrong but some will find that term offensive.

Since when have we become a training ground for people studying psychology?

Wow, I thought I was making a helpful suggestion, but your response seems so negative it's almost hostile. At the very least it is dismissive without regard to good intentions.

For one thing, someone posted about a racial hatred crime so I thought of it. I added the multicultural training just to say that it is an integrated part of things nowadays and is usually thought to be more inclusive and recognize people for who they are, not to divide people.

Queer is an accepted terms these days. I used to be a professor and taught "queer theory." There is nothing wrong with the term. It is included in LGBTQ after all. So why on earth are you criticizing every single thing I wrote instead of being open to a new idea?
Thanks for this!

I would actually like it. Some white Anglo-saxon don't really see it... but sometimes it feels like predominant culture here. I had to explain myself that pessimism and cynicism is not symptom of my illness but part of my cultural background... for one. So it would be cool if there would be place to discuss how our backgrounds influenced us. ANd I would like to meet... another multiculties

It could possibly be helpful but I am wondering if it would be more divisive to members rather than supportive. Are we talking about diversity among the USA or broader?

There are non US members here And some may find it good to be able to meet people from same part of world, or of the same religion... culture whatnot.

Instead of random threads people sometimes post looking for peeps in certain country or of certain nationality all over the forums... this would make such searching easy to navigate for people who are interested.

I don't see how it could be divisive.

I'm about as white, anglo-saxon, protestant as you come, but a forum for members of diversity sounds like a great idea. Issues of dealing with discrimination, stereotypes, cultural differences, etc. are really life issues for so many people. Compounding such issues on top of mental health issues I am sure is so complex.

I work in a school with great racial, religious, cultural, and economic diversity and our students learn so much from each other and they have no fear of discussing openly and honestly the problems they encounter because of their "differences", and these teenagers are quite capable of doing it respectfully and compasionately.

It seems that a forum dealing with such issues that people of diversity encounter would open doors of communication and support that do come up fairly frequently here on PC in various forums. This would just be a more focused, easier way for people to find each other for those discussions.

If it were to develop and evolve, great ... but let's not start it just to prove we are politically correct and liberal. Anyone can start a Social Group and announce it.

How would this be any different than the forums that are here now? Are there rules in place now keeping anyone from discussing cultural influences/dynamics?
I've only noticed it happen a handful of times.
I've met many friends from other cultures and ethnicity and we talk about our societal/cultural background.
I don't see the point but I don't have a problem with it. It could be interesting.
There is a much wider variety of cultural/ethnic groups than gender or sexual orientation categories so it will be interesting to see how this is done.

Because the general forum is debate of everything... so there's weather, music, knitting... and specific topics get losts.

this way it would be less traffic, but more focus on the problematic. That's how i see it.
