It would be nice if the public message area on profile pages could have a control for image displays, eg resizing the image to some maximum acreage or perhaps switching off image uploads. I appreciate nice pics but I don't like them huge in the little area there. Scrollitis - not a good way to see an image.

Also I uploaded a resized profile pic in there and it displays about 2x what it did in my image viewer. Not sure why this happens, but it's ugly.

Hi H3rmit: I guess I don't know much about this. I'm not very computer savvy... I'll have to check it out!

Yeah, I think it's one for the site owners.

Often happens to me too that I post a pic that ends up being huge. I delete it. Disappointing.

I can't make everybody happy in this but I think I can answer Sabrina and Hermit's question. Make sure your image viewing prog is set to show actual size, not fit to window. Use the resize/resample function to change the size of the photo to match the maximum size allowed for profile pics. That only applies if you are using your own images.
If you are hotlinking an image from another site then the only way I know of to control that is through HTML.

Thanks for trying, George. Irfanview is very good for these kinds of controls. I checked the profile pic (not avatar) that I have on the profile page and it displays about 2x. Weird. Hence my question.

The max allowable is just too huge.

Hey I use Irfanview too. It rocks for free! My profile pics come out exactly the same size here as I set them to be using Irfanview. I'm guessing you made a copy of your original and resized it and saved the result to upload here so I'm not sure what's going on there. Maybe there is a minimum built into the site software and it resizes what you upload?

I just checked again. My profile pic looks smaller now, but the one posted or linked by a visitor is still ginormous. I realized that I change overall display size sometimes by scrolling so I can see some people's tiny font, but my usual setting now makes the profile pic smaller. Doc John visited the page, so maybe he's experimenting. Anyway, yeah, I had done as you've described here.

On H3rmit's profile page, I see the pic at about 3.5" x 4.125". I'm sure that would change if I were using a bigger or smaller monitor.

When I copy the image into Photoshop, it calls it 309 x 395 px, 4.292" x 5.486" @ 72 px/in. When it's displayed in Photoshop at "100%" magnification, though, it actually measures 3.875" x 4.625". I'm guessing that the last part may be because I'm using a larger monitor (20") than whatever Photoshop considers standard.

you took the words right out of my mind~! i love a good pic, but i am loosing my vision apparently, and keep my screen enlarged 150%. that is bad enough for a pic of 400 x 400 pixels, but when you send me one that 1200 x anything it's unviewable~! (and some of them are alluring ~)

Fix a Pix~!

I find that before I post a pic I always like to preview it first just in case it is too big, If it is too big then I go on tinypic and decrease it so much easier.
Thanks for this!

Why are all the profile pics so tiny now?

Your pic in this thread was larger than the message area and my screen size on this little laptop, so it had its own scrollbars, but now it fits in the message boundaries just right. I guess the site ops are experimenting with different settings.
Thanks for this!

We are limiting the size of profile pictures and other images in the forum when they are displayed. Members were sometimes uploading images that were way too large for other members to see them properly, and so this will allow members to view images without overwhelming their screen.

The new option allows you to always click on the image to see the full size of the image if you care to.

Best,
DocJohn
