I suspect that I may have somatoform/conversion disorder and I am wanting to research the subject a bit before I see my doctor the first week of May. He is also going to be researching the subject before he sees me, as he is a primary care doctor and does not really see may cases of conversion disorder. However, he says that even though my personality, education level, etc does not fit with someone who would normally be susceptible to CD, the symptoms fit, since all other lab work-up is negative. So he asked me to research and said he would as well. So I was wondering if there is a forum here for that.

Many people who have somatization disorder will also have an anxiety disorder.
Undifferentiated somatoform disorder. This is a less specific version of somatization disorder. A diagnosis requires that a person have one or more physical complaints of unexplained symptoms for at least six months. Hypochondriasis. People with this type are preoccupied with concern they have a serious disease. They may believe that minor complaints are signs of very serious medical problems. For example, they may believe that a common headache is a sign of a bran tumor. Body dysmorphic disorder. People with this disorder are obsessed with -- or may exaggerate -- a physical flaw. Patients may also imagine a flaw they don't have. The worry over this trait or flaw is typically constant. It may involve any part of the body. Patients can be obsessed with things such as wrinkles, hair, or the size or shape of the eyes, nose, or breasts. Conversion disorder. This condition strikes when people have neurological symptoms that can't be traced back to a medical cause. For example, patients may have symptoms such as: Last edited by DocJohn; Apr 17, 2014 at 05:38 PM. |

We don't have a section here for somatoform disorders. In UK it is seen as a dissociative disorder but since this is an American forum I assume your posts don't belong there.
So kind of beats me where your post would fit the best.

My particular conversion disorder IF in fact that is what it is....is taking the form a seizure disorder related to repressed ptsd. My doctor has been pretty perplexed over the fact I have been having seizures at all because all other lab work up was negative. The other day I mention reading about somatoform disorders and he said that I did not fit the type that normally has suchba disorder but with everything else coming up dry he is definitely willing to consider that as a possibility.

What are the symptoms of what you believe may be a somatoform disorder?

Seizures that neurologist says are due to repressed ptsd triggered by stress/anxiety. Tbey are not psuedoseizures as I have been biting my tongue and I even bit all the way through my bottom lip once. Also some incontinence. I have been having flashbacks and nightmares more often since the seizures began last May. All other medical causes of seizure disorder have been ruled out and they are well controlled with klonopin. Sounds a lot like conversion disorder after having read about somatoform and conversion disorders....came across that section in my DSM-IV quite by accident actually so maybe God trying to tell me something....

Not by a psychologist but by my doctor and confirmed by the neurologist he sent me to. My doctor knows my history though I have not been extremely specific about my abuse. He emailed me today and said he thinks conversion disorder is very possible after doing some reading up on it and offered to refer me to a therapist. I told him I would rather just vent to him if it was all the same to him...that is if I choose to talk about my issues. He replied that he would be happy to listen if that's what I wanted but he wasn't sure if he was in a position to be a counselor which is fine with me because I don't really think advice at this point will do any good but letting it out to someone might. I have not decided yet if I am gonna talk about it.

k. Well you might read in the Anxiety/PTSD forums and see if you identify with the symptoms etc., and try the "solutions". Good wishes.
