For some reason PC has become incredibly slow. It can take up to 5 minutes for me to access a forum, or a thread. It doesn't happen all the time but more often than not lately.

I don't even have crumbs in the cookie jar! All other sites seem to be ok.

Frustrating for me as I don't post as often as I used to so and when I am here I want to make the most of it!

Anyone else experiencing this?

I don't think I am. Sorry. Hmmm. Maybe you hit it when DocJohn was making changes/doing upkeep. Or, maybe there happened to be more people on the site at the time you were too? Those could influence the speed in "unseen" ways.

Try deleting your PC Cookies from your profile and then log out and back in again - and see if that helps any... it did for me.

When is the last time you cleaned up your computer and temp files from the control panel? - and how many days does your computer save info for?

I clean up on a daily basis. I run an Internet Sweeper followed by an Ad-aware scan. If anything is left, I defrag and do all windows cleaning necessary.

I have a bit of a hatred for temp files so they get deleted with some speed!

However ....... tonight has been kind to me and I have been able to access forums without too much hassle!

Hmm - Battling with this site

Maybe try adding the PC address to your trusted website list, both on your computer on in your virus protection & spy-wear program.

another idea... do you use a spyware detector like adaware or spy sweeper? They help clear out stuff that is hidden on your computer and causes sites be slowed down

You might want to watch it a bit with the temp files; they're often created by your operating system for its use and they delete/overwrite some of them themselves after they've finished using them; I wouldn't delete anything that isn't at least a couple weeks old. Deleting things too religiously can make your system work harder because it has to reinvent-the-wheel from scratch each time if what it made previously isn't there anymore. That can slow you down (but probably not "hurt" your machine).

Hi Sabrina,
Did you try turning off the signatures and avatar pictures? Before I had dsl I had major problems with page loading but now, for 99% of the time they just zap right on. All the pictures could be making your computer go slow.
Hope that helps.

Folks, just a reminder, re: slowdowns.

We sometimes do work or maintenance on the server and we don't always post a notice when we do so. If you notice a slowdown or issue with the site one day, check back the next day, before assuming it's a permanent slowdown or issue. Then feel free to post here or PM me directly with the issue.

We regularly monitor the server to ensure there are no performance issues with things here. We've also been doing a lot of work on the community software more recently to support more of the social networking functionality we've been rolling out.

Thanks for your patience and your help!
DocJohn

Thank you DocJohn. I have not assumed that anything is permanent!

However, it has been for more than 3 weeks which seems to be a little longer than the norm. (It took me almost 10 minutes to get to the technical forum).

I cannot see where the problem is on my side. On the other hand, the problem may very well NOT be with this site either.

I have a lot of work to do so I guess not coming here for a while won't do me any harm. Thanks to everyone, for their comments and assistance.

We're not aware of any long-term network or server problems that would be causing your specific issue, unfortunately.

In 3 weeks' time, we're moving to a new data center down the street. Perhaps that will help....

Ok let me try to be specific with an option, ok? A computer will slow if you don't have enough memory alloted for temporary files.

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click System
Click Performance
Click Advanced see processor usage, memory usage, virtual memory ADJUST This.

Click CHANGE on virtual memory... and adjust the amount of memory UP so the computer has more to work from when accessing pages etc. The other adjustments can help too... but this is the best way I've found... the other procesor and memory usages I have to run the programs, rather than the cache, btw.

Good wishes!
