It seems to take a maddening amount of time to move around PsychCentral lately. Is it my computer?? "Clicking" is no longer instantaneous, it takes 30 sec or more.

I do biweekly maintenance on my laptop: delete cookies, etc. I defrag ever so often. I don't have 10 programs running at once and I'm not on battery when the hesitation occurs. Several times, I make a reply and I'm kicked off the website. I know it must be something with my computer because no one else is mentioning a problem.

Hmm. No PC is running fine. Yes, it has to be either your computer or your programs, ISP etc. Are you on dialup? What does it say the speed is now? I found when I was on dial up they consistently slowed the rate, pushing me into DSL. Of course.

Perhaps someone added a new program to your computer? I know when I loaded my speech program even onto this giant memory computer, it slowed it some. PsychCentral running slow??

Did you check and see how many processes you have running at one time? Someone may have added a program that runs "in the background" all the time.

Did someone set your virus software to constantly check? THAT is a huge slow downer (is that a word?)

I hope even if it's none of these things, that it helps you think of what it is. GOOD WISHES!

Rainbowzz, it's not constant, just happens enough to be seriously irritating.

Sky, I have a private lap top that no one touches so no new programs. AND I'm on cable! Supposed to be super de duper fast - well most of the time.

I will check the virus settings. That I hadn't thought of.

Thank you both for the help.

I have expressed frustration due to issues such as this. I even stayed away from PC for a couple of weeks until my blood pressure returned to normal. (I was lucky if I got 30 seconds - it was mostly 2 minutes plus!)

My computer is squeaky clean and to this day, I maintain the problem was not on my side.

It has gotten better though (since DocJohn changed servers or something a month or 3 back) - and when it does happen now - I just leave PC for a while.

I agree that it is seriously irritating though.

We don't know about any problems unless people take a minute and actually write us! PsychCentral running slow??

There has been no changes to the server or our setup for many months now and we keep an eye on things all day, everyday.

There was an action we were doing on this server that caused slowdowns every other week when we ran it, so we're moving that process over to another server. That's the only thing I can think of that could be causing issues.

Thanks for the information -- the more you can provide about time of day, what you were doing, and then what happened exactly -- the better. It can help us troubleshoot possible problems better and come up with possible solutions. Thank you!! PsychCentral running slow?? PsychCentral running slow?? PsychCentral running slow??

Gosh I wrote about it so much that I thought people were getting sick of me!!

Anyway - I do recall a change of some sort - perhaps I was wrong in posting that it was servers - but there was a thread about a change of some sort - I have no energy now but perhaps I will look for it.

I don't want to hijack SongBirdandDaisy's thread with my own previous hassles though, especially since there has been major improvement to what I was experiencing (and posting frequently about).

How's it going now SongBird? Any improvement?

Doc John, I initially thought it was heavy traffic. This is a large, interactive site. It's hesitating now, at 4:33 PM with 50 members online. It hesitates when I move from tab to tab, forum to forum, or replying. Generally, it's all slow. The icons take longer to pop up. I even considered sunspots PsychCentral running slow??

Hope I didn't offend you by sounding harsh. I really assumed it was my laptop and was looking for advice on how to speed things up. Or what I was doing that was causing these periods of hesitation and being bounced off. This is a wonderful site, well maintained and have never had a breach of security.

I'm placing this post here because I brought the original post public and should apologize public if I offended. (I liked the smiley's - they left the post friendly as I believe you intended). PsychCentral running slow?? PsychCentral running slow?? PsychCentral running slow??

Nope, not harsh at all. Your feedback helps me and my team troubleshoot issues as they arise.

This Saturday morning, we're going to transfer the forums database to another, less loaded server. That should help performance a bit.

Thank you for your patience and feedback, it is very helpful.

When this morning specifically? It helps to be as specific as possible to help us troubleshoot specific issues, otherwise we can't look into things without as much info as possible.

Feel free to start a new thread to discuss other issues, like Vista or optimizing Windows.

Hello DocJohn,

If you see my post above it was about 5:32am yesterday morning but clearing cookies seemed to help the problem for me.

No problem this morning though. PsychCentral running slow??

We've tracked down the process to the weekly backup run. We have some ideas on how to reduce this slowness, but it may take us some time to implement because it means removing additional services from this server. The weekly backup is done over the weekend in early morning hours (to affect the least amount of users).

Thanks!
