Well, it might mean something elsewhere in the world, but it's a very offensive and derogatory term for a homosexual in the US and shouldn't under any circumstance be used if others present are deeply offended by it. This site is full of people hurting and struggling so offensive terms, no matter how harmlessly used, shouldn't be allowed.

In fact, may I request that that word be censored on the forums?

I agree. In my experience, a mod who communicates with the room as a whole in open chat is the quickest and most effective. I've seen a mod defuse rancor in an instant and a new topic begin with all members behaving appropriately. It is simple, sensible, and fast. Members listen to moderators in the chat room when they direct us. No feelings hurt when it is addressed to the open chat room to all the chat room members, not pointing out anyone, just pointing to the topic.

Folks, because this thread is not about specific members nor about specific member behaviors and the actions taken against them, we're going to close this thread. It is not particularly helpful to describe something without context; anything can seem absurd in such situations.

We have a system that has worked well for most situations for many years, and we've answered the original OP's question about how the rules are applied in chat.

We will continue to work with our community support team to ensure we are reacting to situations and issues that arise in chat in a timely and appropriate manner.

Thank you,
DocJohn

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
