Most of you know, if you've read my animation posting, that I have had some ongoing, intermittent problem with losing animation on this site.
<font color=purple>
Well, the last few weeks, I can also get into this site, like today, without having to log in! That means, no typing in my s/n nor my password. I can post (see?) and also pick up my PMs...

The screen info doesn't change though, like the PM envelope notification doesn't go away even though I read the PMs... and the numbers on the unread posts don't change...

So... I beginning to think my problems with animation is just that it's a sensitive notebook and being affected by someone's messing er.. sorry DocJohn if it's you "changing" things here at the site.

Anyone else noticing some weird events? If we don't tell, then the site might crash from accumulation down the road, and we wouldn't want that.

<font color=green> This isn't a "remember my password" type problem I never utilize that... and it isn't that I never turned my computer off, so it remembered and allowed me back. This is, I just turned it on, plugged it in and came in without knocking!

Sky just a thought, about cookies (see my post to Ozzie) did you once tell me that you delete all the temporary files everytime you finish your web surfing?

Is it possible that the "remember" preference is set, but in the past you've had to log in everytime anyway simply because you erase your cookies after each session?

Maybe for some reason the temp files aren't getting cleared everytime now when you close.

No, I did check that the files are clearing though, thanks. (Yeah, when browser closes, it clears all cookies) <font color=green>

In fact, I just came back in, after leaving (I rarely actually "log out" I'm getting into the site without logging in!) and putting the computer on stand by... then reconnecting to the net, and had to log in here this time.

Plus, the PM envelope is now flashing ... even though I have picked up all my PMs! Gee, it had never flashed before... but still no animation... bummer but I got an envelope winking at me. LOL

I don't even have my security levels set to maximum... I lowered them earlier this year when I was having the Java problems into chat...

and I redid the resolution and turned the computer off... and back on and all that...

BTW while I'm discussing things not working right for me at this site: I still am NEVER "returned to the forum" automatically after making a post. I always have to do this manually (wasn't that way when I first arrived.)<font color=purple>

oh well. wonder what's next to go awry???

I still am pretty sure it has to be SOMETHING on your end. If your cookies were truly being cleared, off the drive, out of memory, everything... then even if the site wanted to log you in automatically it would not be able to because it would have no way of knowing who you are, so it wouldn't know who to log you in as.

Weird about the blinking envelop too, because I think that is just an animated GIF as well. I don't have mail waiting so I can't confirm that right now. I will try to remember to check it before I click on it next time I have a PM.

If it is a bad cookie that could also explain why the flashing envelope won't go away though. I'm not sure if the server marks mail that has been read or if that is stored in a cookie as well.

It could be that the cookie for this site got corrupted, so it won't update, and isn't being deleted (for example the system thinks it is "in use" at the time it tries to delete it). But it is not corrupted enough that the browser can't read it when you come here.

Do you know how to go to the folder where the cookies are stored and see if there are any files in there? You should check for hidden files too in case it has gone "invisible" on you. I'm getting into the site without logging in!

Just did a quick check... the cookie for here should be named something like: yourname@forums.grohol[2].txt ... the number will likely be different, just look for a text file with "@forums.grohol" Also see if there is more than one, maybe with different numbers.

When I move mine out of my cookie folder (close the browser first) then open and try to come here, I am not logged in. And it looks like it doesn't give you a choice to remember or not... unless it is in the preferences somewhere else here. When I moved the cookie back I still had to log in but it remembered my password.

It looks like the cookie stores some of your user settings and your password (it is coded so no one can just open the cookie and learn your password). It doesn't look like it keeps track of your last date so the server must do that with your user data. I'm just guessing.

But that is definitely the name of the cookie to look for. Maybe just do a full search for filenames on your system for forums.grohol and see what comes up?

This Web site, like most sites online today and virtually all online communities and forums, uses a computer file called a cookie that saves your preferences for the site to your computer. This makes it easy to log you in and remember what messages you've read without additional effort on our end.

IF YOU LOG IN FROM A PUBLIC COMPUTER OR DO NOT WANT OTHERS TO SEE YOUR ACCOUNT HERE, you should simply logout (using the "Logout" menu option at the top menu) at the end of your session, then close your Web browser. That will ensure (in 99% of cases) that you will be logged out of the site and your account cannot be used by others using the same computer.

Cookies are necessary to run these forums; they are not optional. If you do not accept cookies from this site, you will have troubles with the forums that we cannot solve.

DocJohn
