I have a simple question. When I go to "Member's List" to find a member, I can't help but notice all the members, such as:

_Krystal_ Posts Date Joined
New Member

1 03-16-05

I am accustomed to websites that clear out inactive members after 1 to 2 years of no activity at the most. This "member" only visited on one day more than 11+ years ago. This "member" is only one of many, many, many more. I'm wondering why we keep inactive members crowding the members page.

Thank you.
Thanks for this!

I noticed that too but then I also noticed that sometimes these inactive members do find their way back. when they come back they dont have to go through the registration process all over again. they just log in. here in america more and more websites now no longer delete inactive accounts for this reason. for example facebook does not delete inactive accounts a person can go many years with out going into their account then log in and their facebook is still there. they just get a welcome back notice after they log in.

In addition to Amanda above,

Possible trigger:

I personally know of members that this has happened to and from time to time they are acknowledged as their presence is deeply missed.

I for one wouldn't like to see their account *disappear*

I think this is sad, very, very sad

I wonder how many members are actually, " active members"
but, what might be a good option to have is searching just active members, rather than every single member on the site

so example. if you know someone is active on here and they have angel in their name, you can search active members, keyword angel- and have all the relevant members come up

We don't arbitrarily remove members from our site just because they haven't visited in some specific time period. Different websites do things differently, and this is the way we've decided to do things here, just in case a member wants to come back in a few years.

There's really no downside to keeping members on our rolls. Few people randomly search our member list.

That sounds like a great solution, shattered sanity. I can scroll through 100s of pages and not find a member I'm looking for if I only have a partial name. I fear the software may not support that option, however. I have no idea what would be involved in that for the technical staff, and other fixes are likely higher priority.

Crazy Hitch, you made a suggestion that never crossed my mind. I would hate that also.

someone was able to set the Birthday announcements to those who have been active in the past year, only. so i don't see why the member list couldn't be 'filtered' also~

I would randomly scroll the member list for new members to welcome on the member list (marked "newbie"), as only the last 10 of 60 or 80 new members that joined in the last 24 hours are listed on the top of the forum page. Maybe there is a way to access all the daily new member names that I'm unaware of?

I was not welcomed personally when I joined, and knew practically nothing. So...I thought that would be a way to identify the brand new members just to say hello and welcome. A word or two from someone would have hastened my chances of becoming more active sooner. I eventually got to know other members only in the chat rooms, most of whom would graciously answer my silly newbie questions, but wish I could have had a "jump start".

Anyway, that is what led to my question. I appreciate your reply, and anyone please let me know if there is a way to see more than just the last 10 of the members that joined on that day. There may be a way and I just don't know it.

After so many years of being away, I'm sure I'd never remember my password! But that's just me. I will assume there must be a way to retrieve a password here, however. I've never tried....

I like your idea of sending an email to inactive members, like FB & Twitter does. That may help us increase our active members!

I believe the website is built on a LAMP stack. It is possible to create a section for "inactive members".

However in real life it's never that straightforward. Doing that will likely break something else, which will then need fixing... Usually an important function. Because it will edit the users then the server would (from memory) require a reboot.. It's not the same as your home computers. Some Servers can take days to get up and running after a soft reboot.

they dont have to remember passwords. any one active member or not who can not remember their passwords just sends a note /email to the site and they get a password back that will get them in then they go to their profile and change their password to what ever they want it to be. just like if you forgot your password on facebook or twitter.
Thanks for this!

This may help whittle down your search:

go to: http://forums.psychcentral.com/memberlist.php?do=search

scroll to Member Since

Add these dates or any date you wish to search. This gives members who have posted (including newbies) from October 1, 2016 to October 24, 2016. It does bring the listing down to a more manageble size and by the # of posts a member has you can see who are newbies.

is After
2016-10-01

is Before
2016-10-24
Thanks for this!
