I don't know if this is even possible, but some comments in another thread got me thinking. Yes, Liz thinking can be a scary idea!

Anyway, would it be possible for there to be some kind of auto response when a person reports a post in the forums or behavior in chat? I know guidelines don't allow something specific about what is being done (i.e. the miscreant has been taken out and flogged). I'm just talking about something that would acknowledge that the report was received. I know admins and mods have enough on their plates that asking them to send personal replies is not workable. Is there some way that an automated reply could be sent so the person knows their report was received? Not sure if this is doable, but would be nice to know that a message got through. Just a suggestion....
Thanks for this!

I agree, or maybe, if automated responses aren't an option, a sort of "Thank you for filing a report. We are now looking into the problem" type of response can be thought up to have moderators manually send to the person via PM who filed said report?

I still don't agree that there should be any sort of "privacy rights" given to an offender, as I feel they lost any rights thereof when they committed any sort of offense. However, I'm not in charge of the site, so it is what it is.

If I report a post I use the red triangle with the black exclamation mark and I'm 99.999% positive my report has always gone through, regardless of whether it was rightly or wrongly reported as being against the guidelines, but has been done in good faith.

We cannot change the functionality of the site to offer a receipt or acknowledgment of the report, but I have updated the instructions on the main theme to include more information about reporting and to assure members that once you click on "Send Report," we immediately receive it.

We try and act upon reports within 48 hours (it can take that long if it's not a clear-cut issue and we need more of the team to chime in on the issue), but most are acted upon within 24 hours. The action may include taking no action, because the team finds the reported post does not actually violate a community guideline.

If the same person reports the post again and again, it will not result in any faster or greater action, so it's a waste of time (yours and ours) to file more than one report per post. Rest assured we are working on things as quickly as possible with our team of volunteers.

Thanks,
DocJohn

Thanks Doc John. I didn't know if the idea was doable. Your assurance that you receive messages/reports sets my mind at ease.
