My notifications keep saying I have a new notification
But when I go to check it, it leads me to my private messages which there are no new messages

it's bugging me, what can I do?

In the drop down that you get when you click on notifications, is there something other than pm's bolded? If so, click on what is bolded and it will take you to it. It could be a vm on your profile page.

Is there any way that an unread PM could be hiding farther down that page, or even on a different page?

I'm wondering what would happen if you had someone on your ignore list and they tried to PM you -- whether it's possible that you'd see the notification but not the PM itself. If you know you have someone on ignore, you might want to take them off temporarily and look at your Inbox again. If there turned out to be an unwanted message in your Inbox, you'd have the option of deleting it unread.

Try logging out, clearing your browser cookies for psychcentral.com and cache, and logging back in. It's likely just a corrupted browser cookie.

what I was going to post yesterday (now I remember what I was going to post), was that it could be because the message was sent by a deleted member of the forum

but then it dawned on me that if that was the case, surely it wouldn't show up at all

hense why I said blonde moment

How you reset your browser cache and/or clear cookies depends on the browser you're using. I'd suggest using a search engine like Google for that.
