My thread asking if there's such a posibility.
https://forums.psychcentral.com/gene...ay-gender.html
My idea of thought is to have it added to your posts and profile.
Posts - near or below your nickname ("Vibrating Obsidian (M)").
Profile - in the "age, member since, total posts" window.

Well... right off the top, so to speak, is the problem that many of us don't necessarily fall neatly into the male / female binary. So you'd have to figure out how to identify all of those folks. I suppose the options could be: male, female & non-binary. But I don't know how individuals who would potentially fall into a "non-binary" category would feel about that. Plus you have some folks with multiple personalities some of which are male & some female... and individuals who are bi-gender. Personally I think this could open a can of worms that is better left sealed.

Good point, though I still wonder if there is a way to make the idea right for everyone

I like the idea of this, but I also completely agree with Skeezyks. This all said, the ability to share something like this is already present. Just share it on your profile as part of your biography-type thing. And you can add the (M) to your tag that shows on your profile and posts. You could go so far as to request a name change that would suggest your gender. Lastly, there is the signature which is shown (if enabled for the user) within posts you make; you could add a gender thing there.

There is a forum plugin that lets the members manually type in what gender they are instead of merely ticking the old binary male and female options. This is, of course, completely optional should a member not want to identify their gender.

While you can display your gender though alternatives such as status, signature, bio or plug-ins, those are alternatives.
Perhaps making this an option for post is a more complicated issue, but having the option to display it on your profile where your age, "member since" and "total posts" info's are displayed can be a great idea!
You could display "male", "female", "non-binary", or other options. Or not display at all.
If you have the option to display your age, I don't see why there wouldn't be an option to display your gender if you want to. It can be very informative.
Also considering the fact that you can choose a gender option in "My Profile", VIA the "Edit Your Details" option, yet it has no public use (I'm not even sure what is the use of it).

If so, we need a non mandatory field for age since some people just need to know the age of the other person. People can post age on their info page but I heard it is too much hassle go look there so that should also be with every post.

If it is so important to put gender on every post instead of those who want it putting it in their bio, age is the same important!!

Actually when I think of it, diagnoses are quite important as well. Maybe we should squeeze those in with every post as well.

Why not just put it in your signature if you want people to know? I'm not non-binary but I don't think my gender is necessary relevant to all my posts.

I'm curious Vibrating Obsidian, do you want to know the gender of the other posters or do you want others to know your gender when you post?

We're just combinations of 1's and 0's here - higher and lower pulses of energy - where is the gender in that?
Thanks for this!

I have in the past been mistaken for a gay guy (which couldn't be further from the truth) but I don't think it makes much of a difference to know what gender someone is or views themself as.

My response doesn't change depending on if the poster is male or female..

I feel it is better not to know sometimes. People tend to treat men and women very differently, even if they are unaware of it.

I think maybe not one's gender should be displayed, but the pronoun (he/she/they) they want to use others when talking about them. I can feel really uneasy when I don't know for sure if someone is a man or a woman and I'm really afraid of saying she when it's a he, so to speak.

I think there are a lot of members here who wish to remain as anonymous as they can, for whatever reason. I believe that having options for those who wish to let folks know their gender is probably the best we can and should do for the membership. This is just my opinion and of course I would support whatever comes of this, but it seems to me it would be too much work for the site master, if even able to be done.

So, I would say that if you want folks to know how to address you or you want folks to know what your gender is, by all means make it available either on your profile, in your signature or via your status.

For those who don't know what gender a member is or how to address them in a gender way, why not send a pm to the member asking them? I think that's a respectful way to start communication and have a more friendly community.

perhaps this is a bit of a non-sequitor, but i would also prefer it if people would not 'volunteer' information about my gender in chats, when i try to keep it discreet...
