I was in new posts just now and a dustbin icon's popped up and I don't know what I did to break it

I literally clicked "New Posts" and on the first thread there's a dustbin icon next to it

I'm seriously worried now in case it was something I did somehow and I don't know how

Going to hide under here in case it means I'm getting thrown in the dustbin

What's the dustbin mean? What's the dustbin mean? What's the dustbin mean? What's the dustbin mean? What's the dustbin mean? Bizis thread (What's the dustbin mean? 1 2 3 ... Last Page)

The dustbin usually means posts in the thread were deleted.

Why am I seeing it though? I panic when things happen without being told they're going to happen

Maybe if I hide under here it'll make the dustbin icon thing go away

Dustbin is such a pretty word! I would say "garbage can" or "trash can" .

Try not to worry about it, hun. It just means a deleted thread. I know how you feel, though! I was on a Facebook page yesterday and suddenly a little coffee mug appeared next to my name. I don't know why, but it really bothered me. I almost began to cry. I felt so embarrassed. I asked others; no one knew what the coffee mug was there for. No one else seemed bothered. I was thinking that no one else seemed upset by it, and I was very upset...they'd find out that I have a mental illness. I made myself leave that page from the fear they'd find out. When I went back today, the mug didn't bother me so much - maybe because I expected it.

It's still there and I don't understand why, it's scaring me, what did I do

I don't understand what I did, all I did was go from the forum index into new posts and it made it appear my brain's turned it into "whispershadow is in trouble"

Bizi, it's okay hon. You did not break anything. If you hover your cursor over the dustbin icon you will get a pop-up that says "3 posts deleted."

I hate when things change without warning too, but this isn't anything you caused to happen.

I'm sorry, I don't know of a way to make the dustbin go away.

Does it bother you because it's a dustbin, or because it suddenly appeared? Or both? With the coffee mug I mentioned earlier in this thread, it disturbed me because it suddenly appeared and because I felt like it was saying that I was drawing attention to myself. That bothered me so much.

It's because it appeared with no warning that it was going to appear
It don't bother me that it's a dustbin, just that it's a new thing that appeared for no reason

I'm fairly certain that icon has been a part of the software since the last update done earlier this year. It's just that it will only show up when a member deletes their own post -- which very few members do. That's probably why you haven't seen it before now. (The community support team doesn't delete posts -- we move them to another admin-only forum in case there's a problem or change of heart regarding the post.)

One icon shouldn't cause anyone anxiety. The forum has a lot of features and functionality, and I wouldn't expect any single member to know how it all works. Nor would I expect any member to believe they've caused something to change in their display if they haven't done anything to change it.

Sorry this upset you. But please know that you aren't expected to know what every single icon means, and that's okay. That's what this forum is for, but it shouldn't cause you anxiety if it happens again in the future.

Yes, I was having a problem with using my phone to post here & it was double posting so I just deleted the duplicate post (s).

I have seen the trash can (dustbin) for quite awhile now but like DocJohn said it only shows up on threads if a post has been deleted on it by the poster.

I have noticed just in life that things can be there long before I ever notice them especially if I go directly to threads via my profile listings of threads I am subscribed to rather than just scanning the forums also.

Perhaps an icon should not cause anxiety, but the fact is it can. Like I posted, it happened to me recently. The last thing I needed to hear was that I was in the wrong for feeling upset about the sudden appearance of an icon I had not seen before. As it was, I felt foolish for almost breaking down and crying about the icon.

It might help, whispering, if you can work on not personalizing the icon by accepting that it truly does not have anything to do with you, but is part of a function of this forum.

I realize that this may be entering the realm of technobabble, but if your browser supports adblocking extensions, you may be able to block the appearance of a disturbing icon/image (in this case: https://forums.psychcentral.com/imag...hcan_small.gif ).

I can probably help anyone who feels that this might help them, but doesn't know how to set it up.

BTW: Laurie, as you probably gathered by now dustbin is what folks in parts of the UK traditionally put their rubbish into. Then the dustmen would empty them by hand into their dustcart, or bin lorry, where it would end up on the town rubbish tip.

That really sounds so much better than "trash can", "trash man", & the "dump". Of course they have changed "trash man" to "sanatation engineer" in many places in the US to make it sound better
