(Note: I'm not trying to be nasty. If staff deems that this post is unpleasant, or would upset somebody, I'll understand if it's closed.)

Is there, or should there be, a guideline about how many posts in a row to make in a single thread?

Some members apparently don't know how to use the multi-quote feature, so instead they quote several posts in a row individually and add a very short "me too" kind of answer. They may end up with a dozen or so successive "me too" posts on any given thread. It's more annoying than anything else, but I've seen forums where they limit individuals to three posts in a row in the same thread. After that they can't post in the same thread again until somebody else does.

for me I dont believe or feel that there should be a limit. some people have trouble with long posts. their attention spans, medications and mental disorders and learning disorders may make is so that they cant use the multi qoute. feature.

i am one that does not use multi quote. I did for a bit but that caused confusions with some members who due to many problems thought I was directing my replies to each of the quotes to only one member. I very quickly went back to doing individual postings so that everyone knew what my posts were about and who I was directing my replies to.

besides this problem I sometimes have trouble with the english language. I use translators. the translators that I use do not understand multi quoting when I am doing my replies. in order for me to write a reply with a quote I have to click on the reply button not the multi quote button.

another thing is sometimes I use my cell phone... my cell phone does not recognize the multi quote button. I only see the reply button with my cell phone..

My point is there probably is many reasons why a person doesnt use or cant use the multi quote button, and it isnt always because they dont know how to use it. it all depends upon ones own preferences, and ones own devices that are being used to post on psych central.

I am glad though that you enjoy using it.

Since other members have explained why they do this, I don't actually have an objection.

I've thought about this a couple of times (to myself), but then the way to fix it is just to edit your post and add what ever you want to add underneath

I also don't use multi quote

I'll quote one of the messages, and then either put at the bottom at such and such a user, (post what I want), or start a new reply

plus I've been known to make multiposts in 1 thread at a time, threads like the coping with emotions thread, " tell us about your bad times", just because I think each individual story deserves it's own post

no issue with that

just out of curiosity, what is multiquote and how does it work

you see on the post at the bottom where you see reply, hugs, thanks....those two black quotation marks. thats the multi quote. you go through the thread and turn that button on. then when you do your reply those that you turned on the quotes for will appear in one reply that you are making.

Multiquote is the button at the bottom right of a post that has the quotation marks and plus sign. Click on it, and it turns red. Then when you've finished selecting all the posts you want to quote, go to the bottom left of the page and click Add Reply. All of the quotes you've selected will appear in the reply window. I quoted several posts here to demonstrate.

Everyone has presented very good reasons why people don't do this. It can be confusing if you're responding to one person, and another person thinks you mean them. The feature might not be available on a phone, as opposed to a computer. And sometimes the poster feels that each one is worthy of its own post instead of a shared post.

Thanks, everyone, for telling me about that. It would have bugged me, and I wouldn't have understood the reasons.

I've been on various forums for donkey's years, so I tend to instinctively self-police myself with things like multiple successive postings - having said that, one of the things that I appreciate about this place, is that people don't tend to get too hung up about posting etiquette - you can be free to express your thoughts in whatever manner seems right for you at the time, without worrying that you'll be shouted at for some posting transgression. This is valuable when you need to say/ask something, but want to avoid kicking your anxiety levels up.

I use multiquote - but as others have noted, sometimes it can be contextually confusing to address too many things in a single post & sometimes multiquote can't be always be used, due to the device/browser being used, or because you started your reply using the regular reply with quote function.

That said, it is possible to manually multiquote by copy/pasting a section of text, then selecting it in the reply box & hitting the Certain posting stylesbutton:

HTML Code:
[QUOTE]That said, it is possible to manually multiquote by copy/pasting a section of text, then selecting it in the reply box & hitting the [IMG]https://pcforums-liviant.netdna-ssl.com/images/editor/quote.gif[/IMG]button[/QUOTE]
This wraps the selected text in quote markers. However, to have the quote show an attribution to the person being quoted, you'll need to add that users username to the opening quote marker:

HTML Code:
[QUOTE=marvin_pa]That said, it is possible to manually multiquote by copy/pasting a section of text, then selecting it in the reply box & hitting the [IMG]https://pcforums-liviant.netdna-ssl.com/images/editor/quote.gif[/IMG]button[/QUOTE]
Of course, if you're posting from a mobile device, then using copy/paste can be a bit of a pain, but the above can be useful when really needed for clarity, or when adding additional quote/replies to a post started with reply with quote.

I don't mind when a member repeatedly posts within a thread, because it's a conversation. What I have problems with is long, long posts with no paragraph breaks. It's also difficult for me to read posts from some people who always post lengthy posts. I completely understand that an occasional long post is fine, but when a member always posts a novella I eventually start skip those posts.

I struggle to use the multi quote function because I don;t always remember which it is, just like I tend to forget which one the trigger icon is so to make sure I don't cause work for the mods I just don't post triggering stuff any more

As far as trigger picture thing is concerned it looks the same as the angry face below it so I don't find it easy to know if I clicked the right one

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
