I've always been at or slightly above poverty level and I've never been ashamed to be poor or let it bring me down, and haven't received any disgust by anyone because I'm poor, although I had a friend who was extremely well off and rubbed it in my face quite often and would take me out to four star restaurants, forcing me to shell out almost $80 while I was unemployed because "she was in the mood for Italian". There were other reasons to end the friendship, but that was the tipping point.
I hate banks for this reason!!

Please, please start that thread. As I sit here right now I am so stressed about money I'm quite literally shaking inside. My bank account is overdrawn by $160. By tomorrow, if that money isn't in the bank I will get a bunch of overdraft fees. I ran the money up over the week-end because I had to buy a minimum amount of groceries and put gas in my elderly car, which takes a lot of gas. My cats will need food by tomorrow afternoon and I have no $ to buy it. Something has to happen so I can buy their food.

I'm so stressed that I took a Klonopin a few minutes ago to try and calm down so I can think of what to do. My nervous system just cannot seem to handle stress any more.

Financial need affects mental health in so many ways...I could make a long list of the ways right now. Thank you so much for bringing this topic to light.
I misquoted earlier in this thread *blush*

But this is why I hate banks!!

In certain changes and adjustments that I have made over these past few years, I've come to accept that the majority and I mean majority of these little "overdrafts" are more a nifty play on books and less because the account holder is careless and unable to maintain their books. Some of the entries don't flow in real time. But woozers don't they make your heart sink and anxiety race?

Glad to see your daughter could help some.

Yes, banks make a fortune from overdraft charges. It's disgusting.

I had lived below poverty level for many years before I met my DH. I was trying to live on disability benefits. It was so very stressful and severely depressing. I will never forget how difficult it can make virtually everything. We are not wealthy. We are not currently living at, or below, poverty; yet, I think this topic is incredibly important and I hope I will be welcome to join in on supporting this thread.

You are right; it is important. Influenced by society’s emphasis on money and appearance, how can someone who lives in poverty able to keep up? Or, get their basic needs met worried about deciding do I spend money on food or on my meds, praying the power company doesn’t turn the power off.

And what about these monster weather events where people ordered to evacuate? If you don’t have the money or means to get out, you risk your life. What about having a family to help?

Being stuck in poverty can be, not only stressful from the how the hell do I get my bills paid to if I drag my mattress to the bathtub and cover myself with it, will I be alive after the storm passes? That is suicidal.
