Thanks skybdark for telling me about this board, I have never been here.

Well for starters I really have no clue about computers and the internet in general only have learned some things through trial and error.

My computer is an antique. It is a 1995 Macintosh that I bought at a rummage sale. Now what I do know is that I have a Mac OS 8.1, and for the internet use something of a PPP transport modem. I have an internet provider I pay through the telephone company and they have a home page and e mail. I have an Internet Explorer 4. I have checked into downloading an updated version though as I checked into the things of each thing that I had to have, the modem was not the right #.#.# thing so didn't try it.

I do not have e mail anymore, as I started with Hotmail, then they upgraded and my computer will not go there. My internet people SBC Yahoo! have e mail and home page, and I cant go there either due to protocal or something. Then recently Yahoo! changed their e mail and now I cant get e mail there either.

When I click on a post, sometimes it takes my computer a mininum of 2 minutes to be able to read the post, less if there are no pictures and the same or longer amount of time to make replys.

I don't know if it is possible for my computer to go in a chat room as I have never done that before. Skybdark said something of downloading a java (I do not know what java is) when I do click on the chat a new window comes up, then there is just nothing. I have never been in a chat room ever so I am kind of unaware of how the chat room even operates. I have tried to download software like a macromedia flash player and it never does right. I guess If any one has any suggestions on helping me with chat, I would appreciate it. Also if someone could explain a brief description of what a chat room is and how it operates and what to do or expect?

I am hoping to get a newer computer someday hope soon. Thanks for your help.

Chris

Java is a newer programming language that is easier to write Internet-aware applications in. What that means to you is that your computer needs to have a version of it installed in order to run any Java programs (such as our chat rooms here). Unfortunately, older computers have a more difficult time with Java.

You may want to try upgrading to the 5.1 IE Web browser for Mac:

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/DOWNLOAD/IE/ie5_classic.xml&secid=30&ssid=11&flgnosysreq=True>Download here</A>

But before doing that, check out and see if a Java download is available for your current browser (you may not even need to upgrade) by clicking on this link:

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://java.sun.com/webapps/getjava/BrowserRedirect?locale=en>http://java.sun.com/webapps/getjava/BrowserRedirect?locale=en</A>

We did try and make the chat software as compatible as we could find, but it's difficult tto find decent chat software that isn't Java-based these days.

Let us know how it goes....

DocJohn

Kris you might think of "chat" as a "live" version of the boards here.

There will be several people logged onto chat at a time (or 1 person waiting for someone else to show up) You type your message in a box at the bottom of the screen. When you hit "enter" your message gets posted to the chat and everyone currently logged on sees it. Then they type replies, so a conversation goes back and forth.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
